There are thousands of free WP themes available, pick one that has the layout closest to what you want (number/position of columns etc etc), and then hack the pages/css up yourself to get it exactly how you want it to look - its pretty quick and easy via the online theme editor.

It's all about testing. Just for a simple LP, I would not use WP. I would optimize my LP first.
Build your own. Follow this tutorial - it's really not nearly as hard as you'd think: Make your Own Wordpress Theme - Part 1 at CypherHackz.Net.
If you can't build your own, you're better off paying for a very basic one and moding it.
If you don't even know where to start to mod WP themes, and you don't have any money, then just download Cutline, and find some tutorials online about how to mod it. There are a ton of them out there.

What do you recommend for a landing page?
What in particular don't you like about wordpress?

Someone once told me Goog doesn't really like you to use WP as a landing page (dont know if it's true tho). Even though you can make it look like a real site, the WP footstamps (wp-admin, wp-content, powered by wordpress.org and other stuff like that) make the robot believe its some kind of blog.

I would imagine that running Google Optimizer with WP landing page would make it harder to test it (unless it is simple one page) ..and one would have to start testing blog layouts..so I would venture to say that you would get more variables to test against..
I think the only reason g might hate on WP landing pages is if you have it on an overloaded shared server and it hurts your load times (hence QS).
