A bill is circulating the New Mexico legislature that could result in jail time for rape victims. Here's the gist: if you become pregnant after getting raped, and abort the fetus, you could be prosecuted for... wait for it...
"Tampering with evidence."
No joke. This does not come courtesy of The Onion. It comes from this knucklehead:
If you want to read the entire bill (it's only 2 pages), click here.
Here are pics showing the salient points:
Even if this bill drowns - and it's so utterly ridiculous, I'm assuming it will* - it's an interesting notion to think about. Imagine that your wife is raped and as a result becomes pregnant. She wants to get an abortion. You comfort her by saying, "Do it. I support you."
Does that put you in the legal crosshairs?
Or, imagine that your wife is raped, becomes pregnant, and falls down the stairs in your home, resulting in a miscarriage. During discovery, it comes out that you "accidentally" left your shoes at the top of the stairs, causing your wife to fall.
Are you liable?
Again, interesting bill. I'm sure we'll see others like it after this one dies. Legislators are likely to use this one as a bellwether, gauging how far they can go to push through their crap and build their reputation/legacy.
* Though, who knows these days? Elected rulers are sociopaths and voters are too intellectually lazy to consider the consequences of voting.
