I'm using Wordpress 2.7.1 and I have been been trying to find a functional keyword auto linker for the past hour.

All the ones I find seem to apply to individual posts, and I'm looking for one that links specific keywords throughout the site.

I don't understand the question. The only autolinkers I know of link specific keywords. Try alinks, wpseomaster, others.
