Its because the name. Soccer sounds gay by nature and no one likes to play a game named like that. Which is proven by the fact that the only major country which use it do not plays it. Ok, their girls plays it. But thats the final proof.

While it wasn't a penalty, it also wasn't a dive. He stepped on the defender's leg and that dragged him down. Might have been a bit of embellishment at the end, but he was going down either way. What about the blatant interference on Casillas that wasn't called that led to a goal? That was the point of no return for Spain.

This isn't American football, or hockey, or whatever. It's 90 minutes. Two 45 minutes halves with typically 2-4 minutes of extra time for stoppages and a 15 minute half time in the middle. There are no commercial breaks, beer breaks, lingerie bowl breaks, or whatever. The clock never stops.
