I think it's worthwhile to them to build up as much buzz as they can.
They've paid firefox an INSANE amount of money, with a fraction of the potential userbase of Chrome. If they can get more than that number of people and NOT pay firefox for the searches? That's a substantial profit.

I'm getting fucking sick of firefox. It crashes too much and gives too many annoying update alerts. I've been using it since it was called phoenix, time for something new.

A waste of time? The comic book is fucking genius. How many people here look for creative ways to build link bait? Google knows nobody wants to read a fucking 20 paragraph post on why they're so cool...

BUT they release a comic by popular illustrator and include some funny things like OMFG and Sad Tabs and its got a lot more buzz than just within the tech community.

We like FireFox but WE are only about 15% of people or so. If Chrome wants to reach the IE crowd and convince them to switch they need to be creative. And this is creative.

I'm surprised they didn't spend more money, TBH... this is fucking small cakes

The reason they were payout out for Firefox distribution had nothing to do with Firefox...it was to expand their search market share even further with the Toolbar that they had on the installation of their version of Firefox.

Now they can do the same thing with Chrome while creating natural buzz in the market from just launching a new browser and not have to pay on a per-download basis to gain that search market share.

Brilliant, imo.

it's all about knocking Microsoft on their ass. Promoting Firefox was a first step to chip away at taking some of the market share away from MS, now they are following it up with their own browser. And if they can make a browser that is insanely simple for all the sheeple to use, it gets more people on the internet, thus more potential viewers for their ads

I think you are failing to see that the browser is completely irrelevant. They don't care about "knocking Microsoft on their ass" by taking browser share. All that matters is search share.

It was a natural progression: First Google Toolbar for IE. Then, FF w/ Google Toolbar, now their own browser and guess what it features?

It's about search share, not browser share.
