Is it ok with the SEs to have multiple subdomain sites and yet not really have anything on the actual main domain? (again this is for my ebay sites so the main domain is like hotbuys.com) I was initally going to leave the main domain with just the home page and the links to my ebay sites. but then you get into the whole linkfarming issue. So I took them off and now it's just a bare page. It seems weird but I'm not sure what else to do with it.

I can't see why it would hurt your ranking, seeing as subdomains are kind of like separate websites. However, I'm not an SEO expert.

I do have a suggestion for your home page though that will help your rankings - maybe a buying/shopping related blog. "How to effectively compare products when shopping online" etc.

I SEOed an authority site and created around 20 related location subdomains around December last year. It brought in tons of traffic (around 5k per day). Then around 15 May, all my keyword rankings completely dropped. Now the main site and the subdomains are all linked through the footer. Having investigated it, I found the main site is still bringing in the traffic and its just the subdomains affected. Bear in mind all my subdomains are completely relevant and are seperated by location targetting.

When you are starting, with no incoming links to either your subdomains or your main site:

As long as you keep your main site and sub-domains separate (without any linking between them), whatever you do to your main page will not impact your sub-domains in any way, most of the times.

Keeping a main domain bare is wasting it, but that is a totally different issue.

Once you have built some links & the domain has aged, interlinking will become less of an issue.

Bottom-line: if you keep them separate, you can afford to leave the main site blank.

Goggle and the other major search engines see subdomains as entirely different sites, so you shouldn't experience any drop in rank as a result of this. Perhaps make the main domain into an 'about us', or corporate mini-site as not making use of it would be a total waste and even if you dont make anything of it now you can still get it indexed and have a site with a bit of age which will be easier to rank later for whatever you want to use it for.

Needs to be something on the main page, but doesn't have to be much.

Eli did a very interesting study on subdomains and main domains, how they pass penalties and traffic to one another (when they do) and other details. It's on his site ... ah ... somewhere. Just tried to find it but am simply too lazy. Here's a search thread to get you started, if you're interested:

Just a word of advice. If you keep digging up month-old posts to spam your sig, you're gonna get raped.

Don't say later that you weren't warned.
