I'm not sure if this is legit, but it seems to be.

YouTube is apparently Losing a Reported 470 Million Dollars a Year...

So what do they plan to do about this tiny hole in their pocket? They want to change their business model to that of hulu.com's by only having professionally made & sponsored videos on their site.

Say goodbye to having your own free tv station and/or being entertained by people other than overpaid television actors.

LOL at the guy's intensity about youtube and newspaper markup skills.

Google's stock has gone up about $20 since this was announced. They're not suppose to get rid of user content anytime soon, but will probably be featuring more and more partnered content on the front page and such. Also, I read something about them testing out 20 second ads at the beginning of videos.

Does this really surprise anyone?
A massive amount of the traffic online is solely people hitting up YouTube, and running that kind of outfit is expensive. Especially since they went "HD". If people had to utilize their own bandwidth for it, I think they'd appreciate what a great service it is, all the more.

That said, I would prefer to pay a membership fee to have to watch any video over a certain length (say 180 seconds) than only have so called premium content. The shit that peoplr come up with is usually much funnier than anything put out by sitcom hacks.

I don't understand how they let it get to this point. I mean seriously, even a site as large as YouTube. It's a site that doesn't have to advertise at all, gets tons of traffic, and has a huge following. They should still be a cash cow. All they need is servers, staff, and what else??????

I mean come one.

If they want to be like Hulu, they'll need to incorporate pre-roll video ads, which they've been opposed to all along (even though it would likely dig them right out of that hole). If they're going to start compromising shit, I'd rather be subjected to pre-roll advertisements before watching the police chase videos I love so much rather than have YouTube turn into another Hulu.

there's a lot more they could do to monetize youtube if they needed to... it's in no danger of being killed off any time soon...

I also think that google is betting on the fact that as time goes by bandwidth tends to get cheaper and cheaper, so the bulk of the expenses for running youtube should actually drop over time... and they have a big enough bank roll to eat the losses until then...

bandwidth is practically free today compared to what it was 10 years ago... me thinks some of you damn kids these days just haven't been around long enough to appreciate that...

I feel old :/

Why/how would those things make them a cash cow?

I would pay for a premium service that made people hear their own comments read back to them before it was posted, just so YouTube commenters could know how fucking ignorant they sound. Then, if they still submit such an ignorant ass comment, a large eKangaroo comes through their computer and kicks them in the face. Yeah, I'd gladly pay for that.

Im up for watching some advert before seeing a vid. They already did that with alot of music vids where you listen to the song and have an option to purchase from amazon or itunes

XKCD FTMFW

Google's entire business model is a two step process:

  1. Provide an awesome service for free that the entire world wants to use because nobody does it better
  2. Monetize it
Google will figure it out. The important part is that Google is a central part of most people's lives. Google search, YouTube, GMail, Docs, Android, etc...

Over time their services will integrate in new ways, especially with the way the technological world is changing so rapidly. I would love to be in Google's position... having ALLLLLL this traffic and trying to strategize what is the best way to monetize it while still fitting into the core mission identified in step 1.
