So, as I flipped through the Times of India (a leading Indian daily) today - I felt something hard inside the folded newspaper.

As I opened the fold - immediately a voice started talking about Volkswagen launching their new car in India.

I remember as kids I was fond of those greetings that would start singing birthday songs when opened. And this ad had me partially nostalgic.

The device that Volkswagen has sent out with each copy of the newspaper is actually an LDR or in other words a Light Dependent Resistor which is attached to a system that plays a pre-recorded message as soon as the paper is opened.

Nice one!

Cool idea, and I loved those as a child but if I'm sitting quietly in an airport, or the coffee shop and my magazine starts screaming at me about Honda's with no discernible way to turn it off I'm gonna be pissed.

^ Imagine what they might start doing with porn magz now. The centerfold feature advertises condoms, or an adult site.. I agree it's a cool idea but think it's too much, stop invading my senses VW, the ad over your ad would piss me off too.

It works on a light sensor kind of technology. Light Dependent Resistors to be precise. Fancy stuff indeed. And to be honest, I am not surprised this came up in India. Indian averts make some slick stuff. Just shut it out from light. It will die.

Actually, it thrilled more users than it manage to piss off!

How many of those do you figure circulated that day? Kind of curious as to how much they dropped on that.

The circulation was huge - it was not just in the TOI but also in another prominent daily called "The Hindu"

Also, this was a nationwide ad - and not just limited to some city!
