Assuming he didn't just add those people to make it seem like 100 people paid him to do something so ridiculous.
 
I dont get it. How does this help those who have supposedly paid?

People crave a lot beyond what 'helps' them.

Looking at the page it offers,

Unique Experience (For those who 'believe' the story being marketed)
Ego Boost (by having your mug in a limited sample + being published in a book)
Recognition and a story to tell your friends.
 
Nice. Everyone laughed at the guy over the million pixel site... then it sold out.

He'll do well with this one too, and there will be a million copycats just like the last time.

That's a really good idea actually, everybody just wants to part of something new and different. They feel cool for 5 minutes and then descend back into their depressing lives again.... Lol.

3. Are you genuine/is this a joke?

I am completely genuine and although this site might be funny in various ways, it is not a joke! I really am selling pixels for $1 each, because I don't want a monstrous debt when I graduate. I am pixel hustler and proud! Some people have even asked if I am actually 21 and going to University. Fair question I guess. The answer is of course yes, as this photo of me and my uni acceptance form should prove to any doubters:

For non-UK folks, 'UCAS' is the 'Universities and Colleges Admissions Service' who, as the name suggests, handle all University admissions in the UK. Forgive me for deliberately blurring out my address :)
