US to issue travel warning to Americans in Europe

London's been bombed so many times before - both by the Germans during the Blitz and more recently by the IRA (check where a lot of their funding came from, thanks guys) that this 'terror warning' has barely made the news here. When I told my friends today they just said "oh, big deal' as we walked through Central London.

Yeh you feel safe when your strolling around or even on the underground but in France they have anti terror police driving around and police and army on the streets in Paris yet there's nothing like that in London?

The fact that the Northern Ireland threat has increased as well just adds to the little worry in the back of your mind..

lol. It's not in the Brit psyche to get worried about this sort of thing. We're used to it, e.g. World War 2 German blitz of London - 1941 - one million houses destroyed, around 43,000 civilians killed. Other UK cities hit in those bombing raids, often having the city centres flattened: Aberdeen, Barrow-in-Furness, Belfast, Bootle, Birkenhead, Wallasey, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Clydebank, Coventry, Exeter, Glasgow, Greenock, Sheffield, Swansea, Liverpool ,Hull, Manchester, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Nottingham, Brighton, Eastbourne, Sunderland, and Southampton.

prachka makes a good point though.

Let's not forget that serious ass whipping you guys got back in 1775-1783.

Why would the brits be worried? It's their nature to get owned and always shit on. They just take it cause that's all they can do, they don't even have guns.

wha??

Again people not knowing shit...

The brits have consciously decided not to allow most firearms in their home country.

As for the terrorism scare - the terrorists have won.

Someone just needs to leave a harmless suitcase around (put a few clothes in it) and leave it somewhere in order to have airports or train stations closed and police forces bound to a spot.

I'm an American that has lived in the UK for 14 years. These sort of warnings have been a regular thing of living abroad since I moved. I can remember ones that Clinton issued after the African embassy bombings. It is just that until recently, people outside the few that watched for these warnings didn't know they were issued. Now, each one has its own press conference.

You don't have to look very hard to see the plainclothes armed cops in every underground station in London. They're the big bulky guys with wires coming out of their ears.

Yeh I know I'm on it every week, granted mostly in the evenings or at weekends but I've still never seen armed police on the underground. Only ever see the odd policeman before and after football games with massive crowds.

I've seen armed police at Gatwick and Heathrow, tanks once after 9/11 but not in central London.

That sounds pretty credible, noone really pays more attention until it's too late anyway.

Pakistan is a HUGE part of the problem of harboring and training terrorists, and we just turn a blind eye. Hell, it's practically a given that if Bin Laden is alive, he's somewhere inside the Pakistani border. We should just bomb the living shit out of that border region, but we're scared of stepping on too many Pakistani toes, why I don't know. If eliminating terrorists is really the main objective, then we have just as much reason to be in Pakistan as we do being in Afghanistan. Luckily, half of their country is still underwater and maybe that will make things a little more difficult for the scumbags who use Pakistan as their base of operations.

unstable country + inclined to terrorism + nuclear power = shit just gets real

Exactly. Whoever decided it would be a neat little thing to let Pakistan have nuclear weapons should be stoned to death. In my mind Pakistan + Iran + Iraq + Syria = Terrorist nations that should be be given no assistance and should be dealt with swiftly when they attempt to undermine the security of the rest of the world.

Impossible. I heard things like that don't happen in places where guns are illegal. :eek7:
But you guys still get the terrorist attacks, but on a larger scale, and also have to worry about idiots with guns :p

Twin towers? Washington sniper killings?

Good to see guns helped you. :)

:p

we should just blow up pakistan, iraq, iran, afghanistan.

Well is America safer now, after killing a million Iraqis? How much progress did Americans make after fighting years and years in Afghanistan? Killing people on their native soil is not the way to make your own country safer.

There doesn't seem to be any accurate numbers on the civilian deaths, but at a minimum it would definitely be 100,000+ Iraqi civilians.

9/11 casualties was 2977 and 9/11 had fuck all to do with Iraq in the first place. That invasion was an absolute disgrace and that's a valid reason why America and Britain are prime targets from all these nutjobs.

I'm sure anyone that's following this news will know that France arrested 12 terrorists seizing guns and ammunition such as a Kalashnikov rifle and a pump-action shotgun..

Whilst the New York attempted bomber Faisal Shahzad said "Brace yourselves because the war with Muslims has just begun. Consider me the first droplet of the flood that will follow." before beginning his prison sentance.

France has now raised it's threat levels for French people in the UK after releasing the following statement:

The French government said it was now "highly likely" public transport and tourist sites in the UK would be hit

According to Newsnight, intelligence agencies monitored a meeting of 300 militants three months ago in the Ambarshaga area of North Waziristan, attended by Jabbar and militants from the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
