Does Palm even make non-smartphone PDAs anymore? If not, it's a pretty easy decision if you don't want a separate smartphone. I'd just get an iTouch to ensure compatibility. Some schools are dicks about providing support if you don't use a specified device.
If you want Android, you're probably going to have to get a tablet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Android_devices#Tablet_computers, as it appears that all the other Android devices are either netbooks or smartphones. Again, just ensure software compatibility w/the OS.
Does it really say "iTouch" or "Palm Pilot"? Are they mentally handicapped and stuck in 1999? "iPod Touch", and who uses palm pilots anymore? Blackberry, iPod, iPhone, Palm smartphone even.
Is it much different than them requiring hundreds of dollars in books?
Even my last year of High School math required a Texas Instruments graphing calculator that was over $100.

Nexus one if you want Android. However, the N900 is better. You can even run Android on the N900.
Does the Android not have apps like Hippocrates, etc? My wife uses her iPhone to run every medical app you can possibly need.
I would reccomend getting a Andorid, iPhone, or HTC phone. All good brand smartphones that will get you what you need!
theres a whole mess of android tablets coming out from dell, samsung, etc. i dont know how long you can wait, though?
The problem you're going to run into is app availability. I do some MSP stuff with a few local medical offices, and in the process of converting them to EMRs, helped them get set up with new tablets/etc. While I'm a huge android fan, most of their apps were only available for iOS. Ended up with a lot of iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches.
My girlfriend is doing rotations for PA school. I bought her an iPhone to use reference and because I was sick of us being on two different carriers. She has all sorts of shit on there and references it dozens of times a day. Anything you'd want.
From what I've heard, Android has similar apps available. If you care, pm me and I'll ask her which she has and send them over.

I'm gonna go with the iPod Touch. Palm stopped making PDAs and the Touch is more versatile.
By the time I'm done with school I'm sure Android will turn something good out.

Jmizzle, appreciate the offer, but the list of software will have to depend on the curriculum and what the professors want. How does your gf like the career choice, if you don't mind me asking?

Being in rotations, she's still learning every day but pretty much works as a PA - just has to report to the DR and get a "yes", "no", or "did you consider this?". She's been through 3 rotations and has a standing offer for a job from the doc she worked Primary Care with, yet she won't be done 'til May.
Not too bad to have a guaranteed $90k/year job the month after she passes the boards.
