Anyone watch soccer?

I've seen that all over CNN. Maybe he'll do for soccer what Gretzky did for the NHL and hockey. Soccer is huge..... except in the US as a spectator/televised sport. Even in the US there's lots of kids playing it but it still manages to fail in the transition from a sport that people do as kids to a sport they'd watch as adults.
I hope he does a better job than PELE (of all people) in getting Americans more excited about soccer. Pele joined a New York team in the 70s. Not much change in US popular perceptions of "the Beautiful Game."
I thought so that Beckham will make a decision like this. Money comes first!! He had offers from big european soccer clubs! Where is he going now? Playing soccer in the US heh... Soccer in the US is at a very low level (with all the respect!) compared to Europe for example. At the end of the road people will remember you, because you were a GREAT soccer player. Beckham never became that great soccer player as many people thought. The years he played at Real Madrid were not that impressive regarding my opinion. He decided during his career to choose more for a marketing appeal instead of showing his great talents on the field!

I agree with you there. He's more of a GLOBAL Marketing Phenomenon. But when it comes to football, he did okay with Real Madrid but nothing spectacular. They didn't win any major titles despite the fact that Real Madrid paid a SHITLOAD of cash to get a "Dream Team" ('galacticos') together but not much results for all the $$$ invested. His impact in the US will probably, I suspect, lie in his ability to MARKET soccer to Americans as a Spectator (as opposed to the widely popular PARTICIPATORY sport it currently is) sport. That would probably be his greatest legacy as far as the US market is concerned.
Yeah you are right! If that's want he wants, he is the best candidate to promote soccer in the US... Look how crazy popular Beckham is in Asia!
Buying a soccer team with money doesn't work out at the end I think, see what happen at the moment with Chelsea. They are not doing well at all (last few matches) in the english soccer competition!
I don’t think that there is much fan following for Beck’s in the States as other sports like baseball and hockey are much popular and people crave to watch sport stars related to these sports. Beckham should have been in any European team as it would have been much better for a star like him and his reputation but I guess it’s the $$$ that comes first.
Also dutch soccer player Edgar Davids (did a lot of commercials in the past for all sort of Nike campaigns, etc.) probably goes to US to play for FC Dallas I heard today heh. There were rumours that Ajax Amsterdam was interested in him! Also in the past Edgar Davids played for Ajax. It might be clear that this has nothing to do with sportive motivations but everything is about the money here!! On the other hand when you become 33 years of age and you have a few more years to go as a professional soccer player before you will retire, you might want to cash in money and think about your future as well (especially when the best days of your career are over)!
