Is it just me or are you guys tired of getting harassed by this faggot Jimmy Wales every six months for donations?

You could monetize that site in two seconds. I understand they want to keep it ad free, but I think unless some sort of government entity steps in to pay the operating costs it's a pipe dream.

Jimmy Wales is a libertarian, and wikipedia proves a point. Private donations can do a better job at educating people than government.

Selling hockey arena branding style advertising is better than donations. Throw up non-clickable ads for Tide and Coca Cola. Put them in shitty spots below the fold too.

This wouldn't degrade the integrity of the site and would provide a stable source of revenue.

It obviously works well so why would they taint their site with ads for shitty companies like coca cola? Don't visit the site if it bothers you that much.

If the government took it over, you would no longer have a choice whether to donate or not. They would tax you to pay for the site's upkeep. Then, they would pay millions for a redesign. Then, they would hire thousands of people, and pay them twice private market rates.

This way is much better.

This. If you can't reach in to your own wallet and give the site even $5 for all the use you've got out of it you're just silly.

OR they could put 'Sponsored by 7up Bitches' on the site and nobody has to reach into their wallet ever again.

You know, like google, facebook, yahoo, youtube, bing, cnn and a couple others.

Isn't this basically an ad? And how is it any more annoying than other ads you'd see on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is one of the best things that has ever happened in the history of the human race (the sheer amount of readily available knowledge is incredible) and Wikipedia is one of the first places I'd go to donate money.

Originally Wales did want to put adverts up, but the active editors hate the idea and Wales won't even mention advertising now (whether or not he's swallowed the anti-commercialism kool aid, I don't know).

I'm saying it's an option along with advertising sales. Begging for money when you have a PR9 website and rank 1-4 for pretty much anything is fucking retarded.

undermines the cause. Jerry Lewis' MDA has a PR7 site but you don't see them selling ad space.

No but paying for libraries is.

Yeah, but you still have to kick the local government in the ass, constantly, to keep funding libraries, even up in here in Vancouver where finances are waaaay better than down south.

As far as I can see right now, the function of a lot of government is to find money to fund the pensions of retiring civil servants.

Yeah it's annoying. They could put a tiny banner that only advertises brands on the bottom left of the page no one would ever see and easily pay for their whole fucking costs.

I don't mind them asking for donations. I'm thinking I'm going to change my e-commerce websites so that a % of the sale is donated to Wikipedia. We're already going to donate, the only question is where-to and I think Wikipedia is a great cause.

Wikipedia is great but it is full of disinformation which is a drawback. It would be great if they would monetize it and put more work into it. All they would have to do is put disclaimer on any entry of an advertiser.
