Why do networks need that info?

Is there any way around that?

I was just concerned for ID theft reasons.

Do you guys have to put it in? I always have a box for it, and always leave it out, since I don't have one, as I'm in the UK, and it always lets me through.

they dont make you input any form of I.D other than name and address?

Don't worry too much about ID theft. They just need it for tax purposed. Sure in theory they COULD get compromised but I can't remember a time that's happened on a major network and it could just as well happen at your bank. Hell, I had a bank as a client once and had to build some mailing lists from current customers and they sent me CSV files of their entire database, full info and all lol.

I hate how some of the most basic information sometimes passes me by. I didn't know you could get an EIN for free. Thanks for the info and link papajohn! +rep for you.
