My husband has requested a remote car starter for christmas and I'm freaking out. He says they are generic and compatible with any car but I just know I'm going to fuck up this order some how. This is beyond my xx chromosomal abilities, moar xy input plz.

Any of you guys have one? Recommendations?

prolly just get a gift card at a local auto shop that installs that stuff, someone is going to have to install it anyway.

so just pay in advance for the product and the labor, give your hubby the card.

Crutchfield.com. Give their customer service a call. They are great. You arent just getting a random-ass person who has no idea what they are talking about. These guys are experts.

Unless he has a really old car or a hybrid/electric he's right. They're generic and compatible with any car. Walmart even sells them for cheap but higher quality ones like what they sell at custom auto shops and car stereo stores are worth the extra price. They tend to have better ranges and perform better. Plus they have more knowledgeable staff and you can tell them his car make and model and they can reassure that it'll work.

My only recommendation is that you don't pay for it to be installed. It's a VERY easy install and guys tend to enjoy installing their own toys.

Crutchfield marks their shit up like 150%

Get an AutoPage. Got one for my girl last year and she still says how much she loves it.

You dont acctually buy the shit from crutchfield lol. You then head out to amazon or sonicelectronix and buy it.

1 thing you have to keep in mind. Installing a remote car starter yourself, or through an auto shop *might* void the vehicles warranty. You need to find out if your husbands vehicle is still under warranty, then put a phone call in to the dealership and find out whether installing the remote starter will void that warranty. Often times, the Dealer will allow you to purchase the remote starter, but they will require you to have them install it to keep the warranty in tact.

Good advice there. There may be an OEM remote start system for his vehicle, if it's late model enough. For this type of thing, I'd go with a factory made system over some aftermarket POS any day of the week. Give the dealership parts dept. a call and see what they say.

Autopage is great for the money.

He's right, the install is a bitch (ex car audio installer during college) and can get quite expensive depending on make & model. Be sure to go to a decent shop, as there are different configurations for tach calibration/integration and you don't want a "strip and tape" install that has loose connections down the road.

This is not a self install for an amateur. (you'd be cussing yourself just getting the door locks to work, I don't care what wiring diagram Crutchfield gives you or how well you can use a multimeter lol, if you don't do this everyday, it's not worth the frustration)

can set it to automatically start whenever the interior temperature reaches a predetermined level ...can check interior temp.. can do a ton of other cool shit too

Are you serious? Oh noes, wouldn't want the empty car to get too cold  How economically and environmentally responsible.

What do you need an automatic car starter for Turbo? It's not like you're living in Edmonton, you live in Texas.

Does he plan to get a decent 2-way car alarm? wouldnt it be better to just have it all in one package vs. having a standalone starter? I know that most viper and compuserve systems support starters. I've been hitting my head on the wall for cheaping out on the autostarter when it was only an extra $100.

Didn't read the article but why would you want your car starting itself and using gas etc. unless you're planning on using it in the near future? Am I missing something...?

I actually looked in to these a while back but decided against it because I would end up doubling my gasoline consumption. I had a local shop quote me at 40 bucks for installation so it can't be too hard. I think there is a hidden demand for these.
