Just moved into a new place and got all new furniture. Getting myself a new desk and office chair this week as well so I'm looking for recommendations.

What I'd like:

1) Not leather - I have 2 cats and they tore my last chair to shit (if only I had taken pics before I tossed it; the sight of the chair was surreal).

2) Very comfortable; I get lower back pain from sitting on the chair for too long - then again, this probably had something to do with the cats tearing up all the cushion that I was supposed to be sitting on.

3) Around the $200 range. The cats will eventually destroy this one too and I'll need a new one next year. I don't want to feel like kicking them in the teeth every time they use it as a scratching post (just kidding; would never harm the little guys - but you get the picture).

4) This has nothing to do with office chairs, but I like it nonetheless:

For $200 you're not going to get much. Just to go to Office Max or something and try out their floor models.

Do the cats actually have a scratching post? Get a spray bottle and fill it with water and give them a squirt whenever they scratch something they're not supposed to.

Ikea has a few semi decent chairs. They make a high back one that's not too bad. Otherwise Rage hit it on the head, you're not find much for $200. You need to hit about the $400-450 range to get a new Obusforme and Herman Miller and similar ilk are more than that. Try Craig's List and look for used or see if there is a used office furniture place near you. Companies go out of business and their furnishings can be had cheap. During the .com bubble burst you could get used Aeron chairs for about $300 (and your cats might not even like scratching the mesh).

Mesh chairs would be pretty good. There's a few chairs you can grab up on for around the 200 dollar mark. It's obviously not going to be an executive chair but you should be comfortable enough to get you through a long day.

Just got me an Ikea Markus: IKEA | Swivel chairs | Office approved chairs | MARKUS | Swivel chair

Loving it so far, although I previously had a $40 Staples special, so anything would feel better. The orange is cheaper than the black by $50.

Good posture for me, just enough give to recline a bit. I've heard the padding on the bottom is insufficient for some people and I could see that. I also heard that the metal armrests rub on your thighs if you're a fatty. The mesh back is nice: supportive but not stiff. Goes great with my lime-green wall. Solid construction overall, but I've only had it for 3 weeks.

Don't mean to threadjack. but do those herman miller chairs come with wheel locks? Couldn't really see any on the site.

Whenever I'm in serious work mode, I usually tend to lean forward into whatever I'm doing. I had to abandon the traditional office chairs I was using for fixed dining chairs cause the motha fuka loves to roll around.

For the longest time I had a very uncomfortable chair that I couldn't sit on for more than a half hour, so I'd take myself to the couch and work on the laptop. This is very bad for the back, so I broke down and bought a cheap high back microfiber chair from Office Depot for $69.

Pros: it's really very comfortable and I can sit in it for hours. It was priced very low and looks nice.
Cons: Cheap plastic parts. The arms and foundation are sprayed plastic which looks okay but I don't see this chair as durable for the long term. It was also a pain in the ass to assemble.

Major points: a high price doesn't necessarily mean the most comfortable chair. Try them out in the store and see which one works for you. Don't accept a chair with plastic components if you're paying over $100.

Thanks for all the reco's. I'm going to head out to Staples, Office Depot, and IKEA today and try a bunch out.

Now, does anyone have a solution for cat nicks/scratches on top of leather couches? 4 days we've had it and the little bastards already nicked it with their back feet chasing each other LOL!

Yeah, "Unstoppable" or "Nothing stops it" is the rough translation I got from a friend who grew up in Nederland.

Was in Amsertdam a couple years ago, drank all night with some Aussies, visited the Van Gogh museum in the morning, passed out in a park near the 'I Amsterdam' sculptures, woke up, took the Heineken tour, collected about 50 drink-tokens at our table, got drunk again, hopped a canal bus and as we were coming back into the city I saw this badass little beat-up sailboat floating in the canal with "Niet Te Stoppen" on the side, so I snapped a pic. It came out good enough to poster-ize it.

It's my inspiration the office.

I have this one. Worth every penny.

Think Brochure | Steelcase Store Starting at $749.00

Yes its pricey but I got mine used for $200 which was a steal just keep your eyes out.

Comfiest chair I have ever used could sit in it for 24hrs straight no problem lol.

I'm all about saving money on office furniture. I've even built a door desk ala Jeff Bezos for my office. Total cost was $40 and it is the best desk I have ever worked on.

I have worked for 4 years in this chair for $89.99:
OfficeMax Adelpha Air Mesh Task Chair
and I have purchased it for my employees and they have no complaints. It lasts long, is very comfortable, and is extremely adjustable. It's also economical. Good night and good luck.
