Inside Seized Drug-Smuggling Submarines - Photo Essays - TIME

The cartels have been doing this for a while. Its a pretty bad ass way to move product

man, breaching a submarine must be difficult. wouldnt' want to be first doorman..err latchman? ha

sick it was constructed themselves. They would have to hire like mechanical, nautical and aerospace engineers to build that?

hey man, business models change. ha.

I hope they were't imbibing any product to pass the time on their voyage. Can you imagine getting drug-induced paranoia on a covert sub?

Oh and @1337hovie? One word: Russians.

@amateursurgeon - haha, i gotta open the latch - i neeeed fresh aaiirrr!

@rage9 - kidnap, or big enough bank roll to pay em lol.(i wouldnt want someone i kidnapped building something that effects my "money sites" so-to-speak, ha. Think ironman...didnt work out well for them)

i was watching NG border wars and these guys (narco's) attach huge magnets to the bottom of unsuspecting ships and attached to the magnets are huge bales of coke. When the ships go into port (mainly USA) the guys scuba and get the bales. I would love to see a narco think tank in action ....

Surprised to see drug dealers use submarines now. Very innovative i must say hah

Fixed that for you.

lulz

Yeah I don't think that was a problem...

A captain hired by the narco-traffickers, who made three runs to Mexico at the helm of semi-subs, described the conditions as "hellish," with the crew subsisting on crackers, canned beans and milk. "There's always an armed person on board to keep watch over the crew and the cargo," the former captain told TIME. "If anyone starts to panic or mutiny, his orders are to eliminate the troublemaker."

I guess those subs cost a couple million to build, and they're one time use only. Not a bad investment if you can smuggle a couple hundred million in coke.

sweet photos on that Time link you gave, they built one full scale sub that can carry 8 tons of coke, thats nuts. Doesn't surprise me though, with that much money involved, they will always find a way to get it here.

i seen this a few weeks back, thats some serious stuff, but credit when it due thats a good idea

TIME said they were "relatively" cheap to build. Makes me wonder.

I doubt it cost millions. They can only descend to 30feet.

Na, you can put together a 10m or less sub for less than 75k. That's US, prolly cheaper in Columbia.
