Perhaps this is an uncommon post here, but whatever...

I need to take my shit to the next level in terms of PPC, but I need more cash to do it.

I think I am going to have to get a job.

I am 23 years old and have never had a "job" before. I know. It's lame.

I have been making ends meat on the web, but it is time to stop surviving and start thriving...

So, my question...

WTF do I wear to a job interview for a general labor position?

Will jeans and a golf shirt do?

Slacks and a dress shirt?

I am clueless...

Thanks in advance...

Dress one level up. If they wear jeans at work, wear slacks and shirt. If they wear slacks, wear business casuals. If they wear business casuals, wear a suit and tie.

(If they wear suit, you are out of luck. )

A week before you go to the interview, go into the place and see what the boss is wearing. Then dress slightly better than him.

(If they wear suit, you are out of luck. )

Tux, or you wear a nicer suit. If they are the FBI, they'll have $1-200 suits, you will buy a more expensive designer-brand.

I used to hire quite a bit. The ones who didn't put thought into proper attire didn't get an interview from me. I was continually surprised at what people were willing to wear to their interviews...especially for a job where everyone wore ties. I would just thank them for coming and show them the door.

Rule of thumb: it's almost always better to be overdressed than under-dressed.

Also, try to scope the place out and wear what management wears, unless it's jeans...then at least wear slacks.

EDIT: damn, two other replies said the same thing while I was typing that, lol.

I will place this here (without forgetting the fact that you were willing to help this guy out):

Any job that requires you to go into an office- wear a suit. You can never really overdress, but you can definitely underdress. At the very least, wear a button-down and a pair of dress pants with a nice pair of dress shoes. And make sure you belt matches your shoes. After all, we're all gay webmasters here. GL, bro.

suits are fucking gay. i have never even owned one. never will. have never had a problem securing $70k+jobs (in the midwest) wearing slacks and a long sleeve polo shirt.

Ha ha. +rep.

Lol, I was just teasing, but okay.

I thought the same thing until I had to buy one to go to my cousin's wedding. Every one I tried on I hated, until I found this awesome Haggar suit that made me look like James Bond lol.

I don't get a chance to wear it that often, but it certainly made me like wearing a suit. It's great for presentations because everyone has to do a double-take as they're passing, so you know people will pay attention to you. You have to get it fitted though, I see too many people wearing suits that don't fit right.

Now, as far as an interview goes, that would get you in the door. What they think after you open your mouth is all up to you.

Never said suits were absolutely necessary to secure a job, but it doesn't hurt.

Making ends meat is pretty difficult on the internets..

Otherwise, although I personally never hire based on the dress code of the interviewee, a lot of people do, so dress to impress & make sure you are comfortable with it because giving a good first impression is one thing but you got to be able to keep the pace when you'll start working there.

Can't go wrong with shirt, slacks and a tie... please iron it if you're not going to take it to the dry cleaners and have them press it for you. First impressions are paramount. Beyond that, as someone that has hired I'd also advise that you be able to tell them how you can be an asset to them. Might want to look online for questions that could be asked in an interview. The worst interviewers are the ones that aren't prepared and it shows and when it does it's just painful and awkward. Hope all goes well in your job hunt and good luck to you !

I landed my last gig by wearing a nice suit and a paisley christian dior tie that I picked up for 15 bucks at a buffalo exchange at my last job. I also carried a briefcase, because that's what I thought people in business did.

Inside that briefcase? A blank yellow legal pad and a banana. If it's general labor you may turn people off if you dress too dapper, though.

Ok, well, thanks for the replies, but I think a few of you didn't read the original post carefully. Or perhaps I was unclear in describing my situation.

The kind of job I am looking for is general labor/manual labor. Factory or production line work...The kind where it says right in the ad "Must pass drug test and criminal background check"

You know, those people who stand on a line and do the same thing over and over again? Or pick stuff up, move it somewhere, and then repeat?

I think a suit may be overdoing it a little bit.

Thanks
