A lot of great films don't do good box office. So, they get overlooked for the blockblusters and romcoms. That's why Michael Bay can get anything greenlit while better films are hardly noticed.
Here's an example:
"Ripley's Game" came out in 2002. Fantastic film. It went straight to cable and DVD because New Line went all in behind Lord of the Rings. They didn't have any cash to release and promote Ripley's Game in the U.S. It paid off for them because Rings brought in the bucks, but most people missed a great film. There are a lot of gems that get lost in the shuffle.
