17 days, and 14 lbs lost. It's been an interesting couple of weeks. June 12th is when I started my diet of eating very little carbohydrates. Since then my time has been spent tweaking my daily intake to favor fat and protein, arranging foodstuffs to suit my palate (this is of course not the least bit difficult when you can eat things like bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning), and meticulously reading nutrition labels. Just browsing through a store, I was quite amazed on how much sugar (high fructose corn syrup) is extracted from it's original form and generously placed our food. Our bodies are not well adapted for it, yet it's put in just about everything. (If you want to see a crazy example of this, just look at the bread isle...)

So, in addition to adjusting my daily eating habit, I have been reading more and more on the subject on why it's important to cut out carbohydrates from your diet, at least to a very low level. The truth is, the science is there to support the idea that a diet heavy in dietary fat and protein, and why it's favored by our bodies. It's the grains and sugars that we are not adapted to handle very well.

When humans eat grains and sugars, it causes a spike in insulin, which is what causes the storage of body fat in the first place. In a way this mechanism is quite amazing, because it's what keeps us alive (too high of blood sugar and we die). Unfortunately it also causes people to look like what they eat, a clump of doughy substance. I'm living proof of this unfortunate side-effect.

For the readers out there, here are some articles I really liked.

One good thing about increasing daily protein amounts:
The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Dietary protein increases lean mass

This is partially why I think a diet that favors fat and protein is preferred:
The Blog of Michael R. Eades, M.D. » Metabolism and ketosis

I'm not a body builder, but this is a easy to read article on why being in a ketogenic state is a good thing (but not if your diabetic):

TL;DR version
I lowered my carb intake, increased fat and protein intake, and lost 14 lbs in 17 days.

cutting carbs lowers your water retention, your losing weight because your shedding water like a mofo right now.

once you stop or change it up, your gonna gain some if not a lot of it back. just letting you know as someone that has been thru this exact same thing already 3x.

congrats though!

This ^

Also, have you considered doing any exercise programs or muscle building? Diet is only half the battle when it comes to wanting to lose fat. Exercise is another factor as well. Gaining muscle helps you to burn calories even when your body is at a resting stage.

Low to no carbs is something you don't want to stick with, you'll feel drained constantly after awhile. Make sure you're working out too though, and when you do, consume quite a bit more carbs.

I have to ask, how much did you weigh before this diet? Generally, dropping 14lbs in 17 days is a very bad idea.

True. But if you lose that weight it is a great way to feel just good enough to change other things in your life. Sometimes it is hard for people to diet because they feel like crap all of the time. But if you can start feeling a little better by cutting the carbs then start cutting other things until you are truly eating a calorie deficient diet.

It is not a matter of this for that or I can eat this as soon as I lose weight etc. Losing weight, at least permanently, is simple starting to eat a new way, a way that you will be eating for the rest of your life. There is no, coming off a diet. Eating right is from today forward.

Congratulations on your success, do not get discouraged, just use this initial push to change more habits and continue your progress.

Is absolutely everybody in the states f'ing fat now? Haven't visited in a while, just wondering.

Pretty much how I feel. Even if the 14 lbs are in water, that's still 14 lbs that are not in your body. I already feel light, better and more energetic.

I honestly think that I can live with this diet the rest of my life. I don't really feel drained. I feel different, but not drained. Why would I not want to stick with this? It's not like I'm a long-distance runner, or competitive bodybuilder that MAY want a little glycogen storage. I really see no point in my eating carbs.

They are not essential to survival. They only provide some "quick" energy and also make you fat. When that energy is gone they make you crash. My body obviously can't tolerate them, otherwise I wouldn't be as big as I am. Not to mention diabetes runs in the family, and the way to develop type 2 diabetes is to constantly spike your insulin levels with starchy/sugary foods.

Everything I read tells me that eating carbs is not essential and can be very damaging in the long run. Carbs were not even part of the diet up until 10,000 years ago when we started harvesting wheat. Well, what about the millions of years before that? I assume our diet consisted of meat, roots, vegetables, and berries.

Good for you! I started Weight Watchers Plus a couple weeks ago and have dropped 11 pounds. Glad people are taking the next step which is to find a diet that is more of a lifestyle change rather than just a quick way to lose weight.

my wife went to the doctor yesterday and they were shocked at how low her blood pressure was, said they only see those numbers in athletes.

If you take the time to actually read through the diet there is a points system (which everyone knows about) that you apply to actual foods, just have to get off your ass and actually calculate the points.

Like I get 49 points a day which comes out to 2 eggs, coffee, and a piece of ham or something for breakfast, a Cesar salad with chicken for lunch, and that usually leaves me with enough points to do whatever I want for dinner and have a beer.

That's what I like about WW is it helps you just change your lifestyle. Once I've done it for a month or so I'll probably stop doing the points thing and just continue eating healthy.

I guess I could have a lunchable somewhere in there too ;)

I started teh "slow carb" diet as described in the 4 Hour Body after reading one particularly enjoyable "bro science" debate on here about 6 weeks ago. I'm only down 8.4 pounds but I've been training hard so I've gained some solid muscle too, judging from the mirror and the tape, I'd put total fat loss at 12-14 pounds. Not super impressive but I'm currently 6' 201#. Plus I love eating beans and the copious volume farts they produce.

oh my bad, i thought they shipped you a bunch of tv dinners or something.

if you can figure out how to do it so you can have 9 beers at the end of the day, pm me.

I weighed 297. Why is it a bad idea?

Because if you lose weight other than water loss that fast then you are losing muscle as well as fat.

my wife went to the doctor yesterday and they were shocked at how low her blood pressure was, said they only see those numbers in athletes.

Low blood pressure is not a good thing. Normal blood pressure is a good thing, which a lot of people have.
