Google Introduces Facebook "Competitor"

This actually looks ok. I kind of like the idea of the Sparks, google already is pretty good at knowing what you like and more than likely will be pretty good at predicting what to put in front of you when your bored or just cruising around. As to facebook I cant stand it have an account but rarely use it other than for business but for personal stuff to me its just awful and will be the next myspace in a few more years

I was invited to try it out. I went to a few pages and it said none of my contacts were on, so what good is it to me? I was thinking of creating some "circles", but without anyone to invite to them, again what's the point?

I'm failing to see what the use of this is. Maybe when they open it up to everyone it will get more interesting.
can I get an invite?

For those who asked, I can't give out any invites. I was invited by a friend who works at Google, but it doesn't give me the option to invite others. So for now I only have one contact who I can put into a circle. Kind of lame, but its cool to get a first look at the interface.

Jesus this video makes me sick... what the hell are they doing?

"instant upload" is a feature stolen from the latest windows phones, they automatically upload photos to facebook or skydrive.

while I am losing interest more and more with facebook, it will never become the next myspace. its already too powerful for that. they will get a govt bailout before they become myspace haha

at the same time, I dont see many people leaving facebook to try google+. wave tanked. buzz had no buzz. google+ ? boring. they might have some cool features and stress security but i think its pretty obvious the majority of internet users dont care that much about their security, or know how to. I dont see people switching completely from facebook because everyone they already know is on facebook.

You're confusing Security (keeping your info safe from hackers and those who would use it against you) with Rights. What Plus is bringing to the table, perhaps mislabling it 'security,' is ease of granting rights to connect to you with the right people.

I'll be the first on here to admit the common user won't give a shit about actual security... But Rights is somewhat of a sore issue with them and is the obvious chink in FB's armor for google to attack. -Which they did flawlessly.

Facebook will just (hopefully) copy the circles idea, so you can share a status update with a pre-saved group. I doubt Google was able to copyright that shit
I think your right, FB would have to to survive. -IF Google's lawyers will let them.

Even then; wouldn't the cat be out of the bag, and everyone want to try out the originator of the idea? Don't overlook the fact that people sometimes do have a speck of integrity and want to give credit to where its' due.

People today drive 10 miles out of their way to save an extra 42 cents at Wal-Mart; cheapness, convenience and apathy are powerful demotivators. The amount of the people that give a shit about giving credit where it's due between two multi-billion dollar companies and their stock optioned engineers wouldn't be enough to move a pixel on a compete.com graph. Not to mention that recreating your social graph is somewhat of switching cost many are not willing to make.

Guess I won't argue in favor of the average FB user's integrity then. Not my style.

K, so that leave Google with one of two game plans here: Beat them to market, or beat them in a court.

RUN FOREST! RUUUUUUNNNNNN!

I could see Google grabbing a decent share if they position it somewhere between Facebook and LinkedIn, which the Circles concept does. To go the "beat them to market" angle they gotta release it to everybody now while the hype is out there, a multi-month rollout is years in interwebs time. I might be willing to port my social graph over once, but I can't see wanting to try rebuilding it over the course of three or four months.

I really don't think it's innovative enough to stand on it's own like that. Facebook already lets you send status updates to a certain group of friends, you just have to type in each person's name each time. A simple "Save this group" button would suffice.

Plus, being an originator isn't enough. That's why Facebook is where it is and MySpace and Friendster are where they are.

To me, the interesting thing on their overview of the site is the Hangouts feature, which i guess is esentially scheduling a group chat?
