Modern humans use purchases as a way to externally make up for internal problems. Shortcomings, fears, etc. We do them a favor by facilitating their delusions. It makes them happy. People joke about older men buying expensive cars as "compensation". With the exception of the "penis" part of the joke, it's more true than most people realize.

If you went around pushing 100% factual weight loss techniques which were brutally honest in their delivery (instead of Acai), you'd reach like ten people, and those people wouldn't listen and would be stuck in a perpetual cycle of not listening to the truth, searching for their easy solution. It's like religious people or smokers--they just don't care about the opposing argument ("smoking's bad", "religion is false") because they've already established a belief.

Psych studies support this. Pretty sure it's even mentioned in Cashvertising, which I know is popular here.
