Finally getting a car - input needed

Can anyone with a BMW confirm prices for repair? Oil Change? Problems or Maintenance to look out for? I have been debating on a 5 series lately. And to many people bitch about repair and I have no real answers on what the costs actually are.

I own a BMW Z4 (about 18 months now) and purchased new. Normally I use it 3 times a week for short moves and used for all my summer and winter vacations and long travels (3,000 km and more in a row).
I have never had a single problem. I make planned maintenance (to get warranty alive) at my official dealer (free for 2 years as extra bonus they did as promotion).
If you are a wise car owner you'll not face a problem, spare parts are not expensive if you know where to buy.
 
If only considering the cars listed in the first post I would go for the Jaguar. :thumbsup:

Good to know you want to buy a BMW.
As alternative one, why not a Maserati? 2008-2010 has good models

Get yourself a daily driver and a toy. In the last couple months I sold my IS250 and picked up a 2010 Tahoe and a mint 03 cobra (7k miles) for a little more than the price of a used XF. The Cobra's supercharged (procharger) and dyno'd at 590HP on Friday.

Figured I'd chime in since you mentioned liking Fords.
 
If you get BMW, ensure its under warranty and stuff. N54 (twin-turbo) and N55 (single twin-scroll turbo) engines are known for fuel pump failures. BMW hasnt been able to fix the problem since 2007. Some people go through a fuel pump every couple oil changes... On the plus side a simple chip will increase your power to around 400hp.... These engines are beasts, just suffer from that stupid high pressure fuel pump problem.

BMW warranties the fuel pump on the N54 engined cars (2007-2010) for 7 years or 100k miles so I wouldn't worry about it. I have 2 N54 powered cars (135i, 335i) and neither of them have had fuel pump issues. Fuel pumps haven't been as much of an issue on the N55 cars (2011+). I did the voluntary recall, but not because of a failure. Both have been solid for 2 years now.

For the OP, get the 535i. Nothing handles better than a BMW. You can add a Procede or Cobb chip and gain an extra 80-100hp/tq reliably. With some other bolt ons you can add about 150hp.

If you go to the dealer they will rape you. If you choose an indy BMW mechanic it's higher but not Jaguar-ass-rape pricing ($180 for an oil change at the Jag dealer on supercharged models).

Oil changes for the BMW are included, "free", for the first 50k miles. After that the "oil change kit" costs about $70. So you're probably looking at $100 at the dealer for an oil change.

I have a 2011 535xi and really like it. Its fun to drive but not so great as a family car. My friend has the 2010 which is a different body style and its much more family friendly. I have always been against "American" cars. Jaguars are cool because not as many people have them as beemers.

I recently got a 06 325xi, drives awesome. Repairs if you go to the stealership are usually going to be on the high side. Oil changes shouldn't be too bad. You should be able to take it pretty much anywhere and get the oil changed. If you take it to a dealership, you should expect to spend about $100. If you take it to someplace that doesn't work on BMW's regularly or you do it yourself you'll have to reset your oil warning/service time Service reset DIY - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum - E90Post.com

Notice even changing your battery in a BMW requires updating the computer in your car, or it will under or improperly charge it. The dealership is likely to charge you $400+. You may want to invest in an ODBII cable (~$90) and learn to do it yourself, plenty of information out there on how to do it yourself.

Bottom line is, if you go the BMW route hopefully you have a decent indi shop around because these cars are designed pretty much to be taken to the dealership to be serviced. It's the cost of owning a BMW. Luckily they come with a 4 year 50k mile warranty when they are new so you don't have to worry about any additional costs.
 
Because my current one has 188,000 miles and the transmission is going. It makes more sense to finally upgrade. I'm just cheap and somewhat lazy when it comes to big purchases.


I am the same way; too lazy (mostly lazy) and cheap when it comes to a big purchase. I have a 2002 Lexus IS-300 with 160k miles on it. I love my car, never really had any issues with it other than it eats up tires.

In the next month or two I will be buying a Lexus IS-F (416 hp). Fully loaded 2008-2009s are priced in the low 30's and once October hits the prices might drop even further with the cars being one model year older.

The nice thing is that I don't see that many of the IS-Fs on the road near me but I do see a lot of other luxury sports cars.

I had a '95 back in '95 and that is one awesome car. Could not believe how it drove, how it handled, how it accelerated. It was an incredible all around vehicle - but little to know driver feedback - it was like you were racing, cornering, doing all kinds of crap, with zero interior noise and complete road isolation (of course that is what most complained about) still - it was a great car. You should keep it until it dies.
 
Just paid 26K cash for a new VW Jetta TDI. We went on a trip to the beach this weekend and got a wee bit more than 50MPG.

It uses synthetic oil with oil changes every 10K. The service on it is free for the first 30K.

Standard features include sunroof, heated seats, touch screen radio w/satrad. Also it's impossible to lock your keys in the car. Which is almost imperative with the wife I have. :)
