Alright, I'm about to pick up a Cane Corso puppy soon. Looking up local breeders in the north east.

And what the fuck is up with tail docking and ear cropping? I found one breeder in upstate NY that does not crop ears, but haven't found any that refrain from tail docking.

Can I get my dog un-mutilated please?

Dog owners, hit me with some wisdom here. What's the deal here?

We had dobermans that had 12 puppies. The day they cropped the tails, I remember how pale my mom was. She's the type that doesn't question tradition but you could tell her brain was like "WTF DID I JUST DO MUST SHUT THE CURTAIN AND GO BACK TO THINKING HAPPY FAIRY THOUGHTS"

I was young but i have a visual in my head of all these tails on a tray. It was pretty fucked up.

The ears I kinda get better. First of all it's a little different...they're not cutting through bone and I think they get an anesthetic. It's also for the purpose of hearing better so there's actually a physical reason for the alteration. (although the tail is supposedly for speed or something I dunno how much that works though) But ears are much more a PITA cause you have to tape them and put that silly looking lampshade around them forever, it seems.

Bottom line, If you're not showing the dog or using the dog strictly for security purposes, I would forgo all that.

tail docking is done very early on (3 or 4 weeks old I think), so most breeders just do it to the whole litter, as most people want this. If you pre-order with a breeder, you could probably get a non-docked tail.

Ear cropping is gay though and really painful. I don't know why people do this.

Tail and ear cropping are despicable. Leave the fucking dog alone, puppy or not.

Skip the breeder, visit your local shelter or rescue group.

I had my dogs ears cropped and he constantly had ear problems his whole life - mostly ear infections because shit gets in there a lot easier. Poor bastard - I would never do that again.

Actually the floppy eared dogs have it worse. Dogs ears get wet, period. When it gets no ventilation and opportunity for escape it just gets worse. This is pretty much a problem with most dogs. Check out Pet King Brand Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution for Pet Ears, 1.25 Ounces on amazon and the almost 700 mostly raving reviews, if your dog still has issues.

Picked up a pit breed from the shelter in August. Happily he has his full ears and tail. I prefer the look of a pit without mutilated ears. Dogfighting is really common here, and there are a lot of poorly done, scissors at the kitchen table jobs where t they didn't even cut straight.

Breeders sell what folks are buying, and those people who want to show their dog or just show off for whatever reason want these dogs with mods called for by breed spec. I don't care for the practice, though, and go for shelter dogs vs buying from a breeder. Our dogs are family members, so I wouldn't have it done to them.

When I bought my Presa, she was out of another State so I only saw her in pics, she had her ears. When the guy delivered the pups, they were all chopped. I never even thought to ask him not to. It actually looks pretty intense BUT I rather have a dog that has major man-stopping power, but doesn't LOOK all crazy. That way you can keep them around you more when people come around, properly train them to be civil and your friends and visitors might give the dog a chance to hang around.

If anyone is getting a dog for protection, just remember the dog can't do anything for you locked up in the basement because your company is afraid of the "pitbull" looking dog. The floppy ears really lessens the fear factor for alot of people.

I really don't have any ethical stance against docking or clipping though. My dog is fine, same as my circumcision, I don't remember it ever happening and they don't seem to be affected by it later in life either.

Not dog ear cropping but looks quite disgusting

Wait till that tail hits you. You'll wish you had it snipped. I had a pit with a full tail and ears and that bitch would would knock a 5 year old over with her tail and leave bruises on my wife. She wasn't even full grown when she was doing that.

As far as I know, all the health benefits claims haven't been demonstrated in studies.

In fact, several countries have banned it.

So I ain't buying the story that it'll save dogs from infection. How about spending eight seconds cleaning a dogs ears once in a while?

I got in touch with one of the breeders today. He said he could do it for me, but he made it a point to restrict me to pet quality only.

Think he's scared I'm gonna start breeding.

When I got my rottweiler, she already had her tail docked. It's done more these days for "looks" rather than function.

Honestly, it's up to you if you want to do it or not. There's something about a docked tail that says "don't fuck with me" haha... if you're using the dog for property security reasons.

Back when these bigger working breed dogs were used to haul carts and things like that - it was done simply so the dog didn't get it's tail stuck in the wheels.

I had a dog that was usual for the breed for it and we didn't get it, till we had a line of blood 2 feet off the floor thru out the house from his tail beating against everything when he wagged his tale.
His ear got caught and torn half off in the bushes.
There is a reason for it

I got swatted by my friend's undocked dog tail and it was a lot harsher than I expected.

But there's gotta be a reason tails exist. Balancing, communication and that sort of thing.

I had a large dog that's tail was big as crap, she'd swing it around all happy to see me and inevitably it would wack the walls and anything else within reach, start bleeding and marking up everything in site with blood marks, including my clothes. But she was grown and it was too late to dock her. Sucked big-time.
