Ok, I'm not sure if I'm actually going to touch this as it is very sensitive and would need to be done the right way, but there is current news story that is getting a lot of searches but no Adwords competition for the main keywords.

I'm considering running a campaign - providing some info, even linking to the official site and monetising it in some way. Just not sure how.

Adsense would more than likely produce some inappropriate results that visitors are unlikely to click and the only affiliate offers I can think of probably wouldn't work.

Oh fuck it, it's too hard to explain and try and keep it secret! (If anyone else wants to do it go for it!)

The story is about a little girl that went missing on holiday in spain, suspected abduction - big news in the UK at the mo. The official site got 40m hits yesterday.

If I do this I want to provide useful info and not be a complete cunt about it. The only things I can think of are child safety products - possibly eBay/AuctionAds. That kinda comes across as preying on parents fears though. Without some heavy tweaking, Adsense is likely to throw up holidays in spain - which really won't work. I'm thinking maybe something else that would appeal to parents, but not be obviously related.

Anyone have any thoughts? Or is it best to just leave this one.

You should definitely hit the fear aspect... all i can think of is like credit card fraud protection ... but thats not too related. Maybe like little GPS tracking devices you can stick on a kid or something haha

Lazy I read this story tonight about how the charity site is getting yearh like 40 million visits and thought hey wait a minute could this work, but then my compassion for the child's parents kicked in and thought no i could not play on this. Why not do both, charitable donations etc and adsense?

Yeah. Not looked today, but when the site first up they didn't take online donations. I thought about setting something up with paypal but it's too much hassle really. If I'm honest, although it's sad, I think it's been blown out of all proportion by the media. Kids go missing everyday, kids get killed everyday.

One thing I thought of is those mobile (cell) phone tracking services - sure some of them have affiliate programs, but I think I'll prob leave this one - got a lot on at the moment and wouldn't be surprised if they find her soon - one way or the other.

Did you use copeac and maxbounty? Also put adsense ads.

Er, not meaning to be rude, but have you read this thread?

I haven't used anything yet - and probably won't. I explained why Adsense wouldn't really be appropriate in the first post.

Best thing to do, is if you have a friend that is portuguese or speaks, have him translates some of the important news stories in the portuguese news sites, since they have better coverage since this happened in portugal, it will give you an edge no one else would have.

here's some sites with good news like this:
jn.pt
dn.pt
rtp.pt

Just put her name in the search boxes on those sites.

I've noticed a lot on these sites that only shows up the next day in english language media about the girl. If you don't know someone just use Google translate and babelfish.altavista simultanously on the same article to get a good idea of context cause the online translators kinda suck when it comes to context in portuguese.

Good idea btw, this is top 5 or something on the all the web trends stuff.

And nothing is wrong with monetizing if you are providing good info not found anywhere else. Now just a rehash just to profit... eh I dunno, but you aren't me so whatever right?

Cheers - I'll have a look at them tomorrow. The UK news coverage has been pretty extensive though - to say the least! So, not sure if it's worth the hassle.

Still not got really a good idea of an appropriate way to monetise it if I do it.

LazyHippy - Did you see in the Daily Mail a few days ago?? They weren't too happy with this exact idea that several other people have done already.

I'm a businessman and call me rude but their loss is my gain but I don't think that it's really worth putting a site up right now because you will simply be labelled as having no heart.

Although I'm up for profit from anything - I think doing that might be too far to be honest.

I didn't see that no, but I decided not to bother anyway - couldn't think of a way to monetise it ethically and the official site shot up the serps anyway and has someone buying adwords now too.
