Not really, but i got your attention.

I've had a burning in my mind to find out what dealers pay for the cars they buy, and now i finally have an account on one of the biggest auto auction companies in the U.S.

So naturally I want to come on here and help my WF friends that are looking to buy a new (used) car or are just curious what the dealer pricing on their current whip is.

Let me know what Year, Make, Model, Mileage, Condition, and GEO Location your in and i'll tell you what most dealers are paying, then selling to you for :music06:

Manheim?

I work for a auction firm, and I am looking for cars right now... I tell dealers this and they are still trying to fuck me in the ass

yea...

want me check for you?

and if you work for an auction firm, why aren't u just buying at auction?

You have to remember that often times dealers will stick money into their auction cars to make them salable. This could be $50 or it could be $2000 or more. Most dealers need to make $1500 to maybe $5000 profit on most used cars. So even with the info you still need to take some of these things into account when negotiating for a car.

I am really not sure if you are serious. How dumb can a person be to bring in auction pricing when negotiating a price for a used car? Lol.

i'm not trying to sell you a car, i'm trying to give you an estimate of what the dealer is paying if your looking to buy a new car anytime soon

if you wanted to buy a 07 BMW 335 and the dealer is charging you 35K, and i tell you that they are going for 25K, then you know the dealer is being a greedy fucking pig

what don't you understand?

Haha I don't know how you are in business.

Dealer buys car for $25k... lets look at all the expenses...

Transportation of the Car
Detailing of the car
Repairs of the car
Advertising of the car
Their rent/mortgage
Salaries
Commission
Other overhead
Storage
Negotiations

If you think that the pocket that $10k, you are sadly mistaken. The business may see $1000 max of that $10k markup.

HOLY FUCK, IM NOT IN BUSINESS!!!!!!!! Thats the point!

And lets break down your logic - B/C you assuming way to much

Transportation of the Car - Don't need this if your picking it up yourself, if you do get it shipped, you buy locally and pay $300 Max

Detailing of the car - Doesn't need to be done if you buy right
Repairs of the car - Doesn't need to be done if you buy right
Advertising of the car - Forums, Craigslist, Papers - $100 lets say
Their rent/mortgage - Fixed price, you can't factor this into the selling of 1 car, lets say rent is $1500 - one car could pay that off
Salaries - you don't need this if your small
Commission - you don't need this if your small
Other overhead - hmm, insurance, another 1k - sell one more car
Storage - What the fuck are you talking about? It's called a parking lot.
Negotiations - $3-600 fluxuation

Bottom line, if you think that a dealer charging you an extra 10K on top of what they paid is what they NEED TO DO to make a profit, then I have a bridge for sale that you'd be interested in

Okay... so maybe I'm nowhere near being able to afford this car :( Fuck. I will though.

Hey I'm looking into getting a G35/G37 for my mom
Year, Make, Model, Mileage, Condition, and GEO Location your

Year: 2008
Model: G35/G37
Mileage: Anywhere between 0-85,000km
Condition: As good as possible.. Not a lemon? lol
Geo: Toronto, Canada

Looked at a few yesterday and the dealer tried to pawn one off with 17,000km for $32k taxes in.

It felt like a anal fist pump so we walked on it, I offered 30k all in and they wouldnt go lower.

It'd be nice to see what the actuality of the situation is... So please let me know :)

Much appreciated.

Lol this is craziest shit I have read on here. While your $10k markup is a little high ... I lol'd at the fact that you claim salaries and commissions count at 0.

Also, I know you aren't a car dealership... I'm saying it blows my mind how you do any business of any kind with your logic.

Markup to the max... Negotiate down, that's how business works. You don't only need to pay Your salary and other salaries, but bring the overall business into a profit as well.

Your still under the assumption that I'm talking about being some super sized dealership w/ workers.

You can be a one man show - hence you don't have to pay salaries

And no shit, obviously you start a high and negotiate down.

Clearly your fine with not knowing what the dealers paying for cars, and happy to get price gouged

Yeah I had that sinking feeling that he was totally gauging me. Thanks, now I know what those greedy bastards are doing... any suggestions on where I could go to find a dealer that would be able to get me a price closer to the auction estimate...

I dont mind paying their commissions/wages but at the same time I dont wanna get ripped off on something that is just going to depreciate anyway.

Also can you suggest any other nice cars (similar to the g35 feature wise) for the 20-25k range that would be suitable to get my mom... its her Christmas present and I really want to get something nice.

What I am suggesting is if you only cover your salaries and expenses, congrats you just made 0 dollars.

Just to be clear.

The system gives you 2 prices.

The current average AUCTION price that dealers are paying at dealer only (closed to public) auctions

and the current average RETAIL price that other dealers are SELLING cars for to the public.

AKA

My trade - I'm going to ask KBB trade-in price + know what my car is currently selling for at dealer auction

My purchase - I'm going to know how much other dealers are selling the car for.

Fuck the dealers overhead. That isn't my problem as a customer. If you can't sell me the car for the same (retail mind you) price as your competitors are ... you don't deserve my business.

So if the dealer is asking 10k over average RETAIL... he has a poor business model re: his expenses and/or greedy.

You aren't going to get auction price unless you're a dealer.

You just need to look for something that is closer to average retail price.

While knowing that that is only the AVERAGE retail price and if the car is in super nice condition or low mileage ... you'll pay more.

well after looking at lots of cars, i'd say look for a higher mileage car. The reason he was selling so high was b/c it had 10k miles on it. But i mean seriously, if you 40-60k miles on the car it wouldn't make a difference.

I don't think OP is suggesting that dealers shouldn't be trying to do this - of course they do. He's offering WF members a chance to get some negotiating leverage by knowing their buy price.

That's a very handy thing to know, because if you can find a car that's been sitting on the dealer's lot for a while, they'll often come quite close to buy price if you push hard enough, because it's taking up space.

Whoever is blathering on about expenses needs to learn the difference between marginal and fixed costs. In a buyer's market, as long as the marginals are covered, they'll often cut deals on low margins just to move inventory and free up working capital. It's why shops have seasonal sales ffs, instead of just waiting for their stock to move at full price.
