Some of you may have already seen this, some haven't. But this seomoz piece on Google killing longtail traffic for anyone but "brands" is kind of scary.

Google Longtail Infographic: How Google Killed the Long Tail of Search Keywords

Especially the part that says that Google has implemented a penalty if you build pages "too fast", that's if Google doesn't deem your site to be a "brand". But the "brands" can build as fast as they want.

I'm having an OH NOES moment after this read.

"The Google Mayday Update requires sites to have more authority to rank for the longtail". Interesting.

Now how can I haz authority?

I use seomoz to check domain & page authority but sometimes I feel like their tool is way off. I have a banned site (completely out of the SERPs) that has an authority of 56 according to this stupid tool.

So now we should lean toward making "Brand" sites. Any thoughts on how Google separates a brand site from a non brand site?

called this shit a long time ago. I told you adsense seo fags that you need to start branding those adsense farms or your gonna get toasted.

When I read that, I was like "Fuck"

I was wondering what happened to this new site I was building out that was getting around 1k UV's per day, and this may be what happened to it. I'm not 100% sure though, so can only make assumptions at the moment.

Before I respond to this serious accusation, I'm going to post the infographic here for all the lazy bastards to see...

It's some eye-opening stuff we all need to be aware of, yes, even you PPC junkies.

increasingly MFA sites is a middle man being cut out if google can just have it on their search results

EDIT: also... no credit? /sad panda

I have just now began attempting to build "brands" on purpose, I actually have one good one that I built just out of pure interest in the subject, but I still have many "non-brand" properties that I'd like to see ummm....NOT DIE.

I'm definitely changing the way I build from now on though.

Alright. Now with that out of the way, here's MY infographic response...

Seriously, this is a bunch of scaredy-hype. There isn't a single point on their chart which does any considerable damage to longtail searches, to which I can Directly attribute to the majority of my income.

While I will admit that without these changes I would have MORE longtail traffic, the entire chart's purpose seems to be to scare me away from ever trying for any longtail traffic, or at least to persuade me to become a brand so I can "Keep getting" longtail traffic. That's simply hogwash, as longtail traffic is still raining daily uniques down on over a thousand of my sites every day generating solid moulah.

Fuck SEOBOOK and their misdirection! -They sound like the ministry of propoganda for the SEO industry.

Edit: Damn you Cardine, beat me to it!

Proof of point: Middle-bottom of the infographic, with the two big Dollar signs... It says that "The long tail is much harder to monetize."

Does that sound like they are telling the truth to any of you?

I DID notice that and was like WTF???

Longtails are much more specific and therefore monetize MUCH better because of specificity.

It is not suggesting longtails are harder to monetize for marketers, but rather for Google.

lol from the way Aaron Wall talks about Google you'd think they raped and killed his wife.
