SAN FRANCISCO: US prosecutors said they have captured a nefarious Internet marketer responsible so much junk e-mail they called him "Spam King."

Robert Soloway, 27, was arrested in Seattle, Washington, a week after being indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of identity theft, money laundering, and mail, wire, and e-mail fraud.

"Spam is a scourge of the Internet, and Robert Soloway is one of its most prolific practitioners," said US Attorney for the Western District of Washington Jeffrey Sullivan.

"Our investigators dubbed him the 'Spam King' because he is responsible for millions of spam emails."

Between November of 2003 and May of 2007 Soloway "spammed" tens of millions of e-mail messages to promote websites at which his company, Newport Internet Marketing, sold products and services, according to prosecutors. Soloway routinely moved his website to different Internet addresses to dodge detection and began registering them through Chinese Internet service providers in 2006 in an apparent ploy to mask his involvement.

Spam messages sent by Soloway used misleading "header" information to dupe people into opening them, according to Sullivan. Soloway is accused of using "botnets," networks of computers, to disguise where e-mail originated and of forging return addresses of real people or businesses that wound up blamed for unwanted mailings.

If convicted as charged, Soloway will face a maximum sentence of more than 65 years in prison and a fine of 250,000 dollars.

Prosecutors want to seize approximately 773,000 dollars they say Soloway made from his spamming-related activities.

He did that shit for 773,000? WTF? That is so not worth it. Or maybe they just aren't seizing much of his money... I don't know. I knew of pharma guys getting millions seized along with their 10 exotic cars and yachts and million dollar florida homes.

As far as I know from my godmother's husband's trial (no names), houses in Florida can't be seized/those assets frozen. That's about all I understand of it, but that's why there are a ton of rich areas in FL.

that's why more crooks of the world move to FL, no lie. I was in a lawsuit last year with the company that had the descrambler deal, screwed some people over for $400k, yet was living the life of Trump in FL. None of his assets could be touched because he was in FL.

Ha ha that won't happen. Slap on the wrist. Internet law is still undefined and vague. Prosecutors can't prosecute ****

Yeah, they are called "no fault" states. FL, LA and a couple of others.

yeah, bunch of crap, and a reason why I'm always skeptical of opening any new biz with companies in FL, or companies that all of a sudden move offices to FL.

RexyWendy, how Jenine? I haven't spoken to her in quite a while.

Jennine is doing good! Staying busy with her family and the company of course :). She will be at ASE if you want to stop by the Rextopia booth.

Yep - Amen to that - In Florida, the homes own you, literally.

So the strategy is this - you are into shady stuff (crook) and need a place to park money that can't be seized. So you buy a 40 MM house down there. A few years later, your company or whatever gets shut down, you get sued, etc. etc. and they take all your money.

Aha - you still have a 40MM asset though, which you could sell and go buy say a 10MM house . . .You still have 30 MM (plus appreciation) to live off of.

Not a bad way to go eh?

Saw this first hand not too many years ago - this guy was ripping a legit business off - got busted, they shut the business down cold. 2 years later he's on the cover of a yachting magazine with an article about which electronics package he's using . . .

Awesome .. .
