Anybody In Thailand/South East Asia?

only if you're a complete pansy. thailand is super safe if you're not a dumbass. it's far more dangerous as a tourist because you don't understand the country as much and you're more likely to be overcharged. also bangkok is better than hua hin for longer term stays. there's so much to do in bangkok. hua hin there isn't much at all to do but relax. chiang mai would be my next choice after (or even before) bangkok.

Thailand is perfectly safe, especially Phuket/Pattong.

I've walked alone on the streets of Pattong at like 3AM plenty of times and nothing has happened.

I am going for my 3rd time in Thailand in the beginning of April for about 10 to 15 days :)

Speaking of USB dongle things. What's my best option in thailand? I was thinking of just going to an internet cafe whenever I need to, but it would be convient to be able to teether to my iphone/have a USB dongle thing.

Is that just absolutely pointless if I am not going to be spending any amount of time outside of BKK/Phuket/Chiang Mai?

Philippines here. Just spent 2 years living on Boracay Island which is excellent. If you make it to the Philippines Boracay is the only place you need to visit but there is plenty more too. Can get slow but stable internet connection there for $35 a month (downloading movies at 20kb/s lol). My neighbor forked out $130 a month for a good connection. When traveling around you can get the usb dongles for internet ($30 per month) but it might be risky in the more remote islands. Moved back to the city now for a bit (not worth visiting for).

Siem Reap is worth a couple of days in Cambodia for Angkor Wat.

I'll be going to Thailand for a few weeks at the end of the year. Can anyone recommend a couple of good spots for me and the girlfriend to visit with my parents? I was thinking of one of the quieter islands on the Phuket side (already done Samui b4) and Bangkok for a few nights.

I would take your gf and parents to Phi Phi Islands, its a really quiet place ;)

thanks soulravager, i'll check that out.
I too am interested in usb internet in Thailand. Do they work in places like Phi Phi? I love Thailand so it'd be nice to know I can stay there a bit longer with a decent connection.

You can get these 3G USB cards for about 2400 baht (say $90 AUD), and they're awesome. High speed internet everywhere there's cell network basically, and it's 107 baht (~$4 AUD) for 500MB. Pick them up at any cell phone shop, no ID, form to fill out, etc. Then just grab the 500MB recharge cards when you need them.

Works great, because you don't have to screw around looking for places with internet. If wanted, pack your laptop around, park your ass on a beach chair, order a beer, and check in on your business. That's one of the main perks to this whole IM thing, isn't it? :)

You guys need to look somewhere out of Thailand. fucking mainstream

I've lived in Thailand more than 10 years.

I was once riding a bus and there was a young European backpacker girl sitting in front of me and two Thai teenage boys sitting across the aisle from her. They kept turning and smiling at her, all the while talking in Thai about how she might get off at a remote stop and what they might find in her backpack after having some fun with her. She kept turning and smiling at them, oblivious to what they were plotting although she could hear them talking. It's easy to feel safe when you don't understand the language and don't know what is going on around you. Thailand's murder rate is nearly double that of the U.S.

Not that it isn't great here, it is, just sayin'

spent a good part of my twenties in thailand - i think you can guess why :D
I actually loved bangkok, there is so much going on, and when you are there for an extended amount of time you get to see places that tourists dont. Hook up with some thais and get exploring.. I would actually advise you to avoid the farangs that live there, most of them were real buzz kills and had nothing positive to say. Can't stand being surrounded by negative people.

I also really liked koh chang, went there a few times and rented a cliffside bungalow, awesome times. To be honest wherever you go you are going to have a blast, just bring a smile and a positive attitude (I travelled there alone too)

Dude, 3G is only around 256kbps. High speed it is not but you can get by if you are patient enough. However, 3G coverage is pretty poor in Thailand. In most places you will get EDGE and you will shoot yourself. AIS is the only network that has pretty good 3G coverage in major towns. Go to www.ais.co.th and scroll down to the 3G Coverage Checker to see if there is 3G in the areas you want to visit. Of course it is all in Thai so if you can't read Thai you are SOL.

*shrug*

I don't know, I got these guys -- iFox Aircard

I think they're great. I'm up in Issan, and it's not blazing fast or anything, but I can stream a Youtube video without interruption, so good enough for me. Definitely good enough to check e-mail, login to servers via SSH, and take care of general business. Then again, I'm in a huge university city, so that's maybe why the speed is decent here.

My favorite place in thailand.

No cars, no cops (except monthly "raids" during which you can't score for 3-4 hours while everybody does "housekeeping"), great diving, great snorkeling, world class rock climbing, constant influx of hot european women. If you got game and you're into the whole "bang a different chick for a week then she leaves" gig, paradise. d00ds looking to pay for sex need not apply.

Single women travelling alone are not safe anywhere in the world, not even in Europe or America. Japan is probably the only 'safe' country in the world. People who get in trouble in Thailand are usually retards, douchebags and whoremongers, usually all 3 at the same time. The biggest danger for a Wicked Fire member visiting Thailand is probably ending up with a dude with silicone tits in bed, though it would probably be a bonus to some.

Figured I'd throw in my 2 cents ten cent.

I know you're a smart dude and have done your research. My personal opinions though:
I'm an island kind of guy, so that's what I go for. My goal of IM was to be able to live the good life living in paradise. Bangkok sucks for the most part to me. There are some good spots for sure but I mostly see it as a dirty, too busy whore filled city. Hookers aren't my thing (nor Asians really) so obviously that's a big reason why some people would like it.

Couldn't have said it better.

The islands always have an ungodly plethora of beautiful European women (high numbers of Swedes being my fav). The islands all cater well to westerners because of the mass numbers that move through year round.

Sigh. If I didn't have dogs, I'd be there. Gotta hate loving my dogs so much sometimes.

I am currently in BKK, anyone wanna meet up just hit me a pm, i think my place is called ratchada -a space condo-

well would love to meet up wf members as well

Yeah, that's because he's a fucken idiot, not because it's Thailand. He did that to himself. If you go around thinking you're king shit, and acting like that, you're eventually going to get your ass handed to you, regardless of what country you're in. Not to mention, just think of how many idiots like this the Thais have to put up with. Loads of people show up thinking because it's a little cheaper, they own the place.

He shouldn't have did what he did, but I don't think that was deserved. He didn't deserve to be sucker punched from someone that was behind him. I'm assuming he was really drunk and I didn't see where he attempted to fight anyone of them. They could have just kicked him out like any normal establishment in the US. It looked like to me in the video they were trying to act superior for some reason. With that being said, not sure why he would put himself in that situation by acting that way.

It's interesting to see different points of view regarding different places of the world. I'm learning a thing or two from this thread.
