I want to rip some MLB action shot photos.

Is there anyway to use professional sports pictures that would normally come from AP images or Getty for free without getting in big trouble? (example: Pic of Grant Hill dunking)

I'm considering manipulating the images in order to be able to claim derivative work.

Any of you had success with using pro league images?

If you search through flickr you should be able to find some that you can use as long as you attribute them. Here's one I found.

True; just make sure you have the photographer's consent if it's not listed with the pic, and that there aren't any logos...though some leagues like the NFL will go after just player likeness, not sure about the MLB.

You'll only get raped if you end up making enough money for it to be worthwhile raping you. Until then, don't worry about it, but if & when that happens, expect to get squashed like a cockroach.

derivative image is the way to go, print the image, have some hot chick/not hot chick hold the image, take a photo - voila - derivative image.
