I think there was a lawsuit flying around from Apple that they own the term 'App Store'. Rather than fight it Google probably said fuck it, we'll re-brand our shit, it'll probably work out better anyways.

Pretty damn stupid IMO. 'Play'? It would have been cool if they rebranded just the games section to Play in an effort to seperate the games from the apps, they could have then build up the games section in a different way to the main market. Putting extra focus on games would be a nice way to differentiate themselves from Apple.

If I'm a brand new Android user I'm not going to think 'need to download an RSS feed reader, oh I know, this Play icon must be what I'm looking for'.

@Rage9, did a quick search and I can't seem to find anything about a lawsuit regarding this.

This is how you learn. no?

I guess. But I would think Google should have learned by now, they haven't. They have like a 1:100 success ratio. Not only that, but the failures they produce have wide exposure and still fail. Usually when people people it can be blamed on not enough eyeballs seeing the new product. Google is failing because they make dumb shit and "me too" shit that nobody wants. Like G+ for example. Maybe they can shove this piece of shit product down peoples assholes a little more and still have everyone ignore it. They need to stick to search and email + buying useful products that other people have made like YouTube, because their in house creation/success ratio is fucking trash.

Seems pretty stupid that you can copyright "app store" that's like copyrighting "grocery store" imo.

I don't know why they didn't continue with their 'g' series.

gmail
gchat
gmart
gstore

or just use the android marketplace name.

My thoughts exactly. Always good to see you tell it how it is haha

They renamed their Android apps recently to include the word "play" in the names also. Now my phone has Play Books, Play Movies, Play Music, and Play Store.

Adding play into the names is quite clever linguistically. As a marketer, stuff like that is pretty neat.

what about G-lastshitwedon'tmonopolize

don't like the layout. too many custom category icons and white space. itunes is better because they blanket their homepages with choices, top shit, new shit, etc.
