Google+ redesigned their layout and nobody even noticed

I am not balla like you, but I am trying :angrysoapbox_sml:
It's not about you. He has this irrational hatred of Google+ and an inability to understand the blending of social signals with search (and yet he buys likes and tweets, go figure).

It's not a social platform the way you guys think it is.

It's an authorship platform for high end Google users, and eventually may become another social platform.

All of the utility right now is in being able to promote your content in the SERPs, which is something SEOs should be interested in...

Yeah but they need the actual everyday public to use Google+ for social to get the leverage they are looking for and it aint happening. I don't know a single non-SEO that uses it and I don't expect any of my "normal" friends to start using it either.

No, they need the content producers (ie gay webmasters) to use it so that they can better control the display of information in the SERP's that are displayed to your "normal" friends. Google doesn't rank anything your normal friends produce, so what would they need them for? They already have them using their search engine, their phones and Youtube.

They aren't trying to be Facebook, they're tying together their various platforms. Facebook and Google are in a war to end anonymity and control who owns you online. Right now Facebook has Facebook, but Google has several different points of entry as mentioned above.

I'll give you an example, a lot of larger sites are using Facebook comments because they know you are less likely to spam and act abusive if your "Facebook identity" is tied to your comments. Now imagine that on a much larger scale, but instead of comments, we're talking all the content online. The best way for them to stop us from manipulating their results is to have our Google identities tied to all our sites.

Yeaaaaah, they have been trying to force everyone with a computer to join their piece-o-crap SOCIAL platform because they just need webmasters. LOL.

They're gonna get bunch of great and accurate sample data with a bunch of offer-driven SEOs and fanboys hopping around in that ghost town. Brilliant!

No they don't.

That's irrelevant to Google.

You're still thinking of it as a social platform rather than an authorship platform.

I understand the bigger picture they have in mind for that turd-on-a stick but they have to get to point A before they can get to point Z.

I see their point Z and I also see that they fail time and time again to even accomplish point A.

Google+ is working as intended and working well for the people it is designed for.

I cannot really comment on how efficiently it can be used for SEO, but am pretty sure google wanted to create a broad social network just like facebook, for if(when) social search is a big portion of how content is discovered.

It clearly did not work out for them, despite their efforts for force it upon users.

wtf.... I don't have an account anymore, but I found a picture of the new layout. Whitespace much?

http://cdn.ghacks.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/google+whitespace.jpg

It's certainly more minimal but it takes up the same amount of horizontal space as FB except it's left aligned so the whitespace seems greater to those on 24" or bigger monitors who surf with their browsers maximized.

Personally I like most of Google's new designs, they're certainly a great leap from where they've come from, all except the Analytics dashboard which I absolutely despise now. Talk about a failure in usability.
