Like I said, I didn't think silva wanted to go on for as long as it did. In the 4th-5th round (I'd have to rewatch the fight). You can see silva is pretty much ready to end the fight and steps it up, but then gets taken down. You can see he starts showing concern that he got taken down again because he obviously doesn't want to work off the back for the win. If you watch the end rounds you see how easy silva could have easily submitted him in any of those end rounds. Sonnen had no submission defense at all and Silva knew this. And as a result you see how easy sonnen was submitted.
And there wasn't a scratch on silvas face. Hes fought a lot harder hitting guys. He wasn't scared of sonnen's punching power. He basically waited for sonnen to gas out.
also think about what happened before this fight. Before he fought sonnen, silva was toying with everyone before that fight. nobody could touch him. The ufc said they would cut him if he did any stupid shit like he did against Mia. Sonnen is garbage. I really think that was his way of toying with sonnen. He let him think he was going to win only to shut him down like that. And by going through all that shit and winning in that fashion it makes him look a deserving champ again to the people. He was getting a lot of hate at the time because of the crap he was pulling with all the previous fights.
But now that sonnen gets a rematch this is silvas proving point. Hes gonna kick sonnens ass so bad and say.. "look this guy never stood a chance I was fucking with him and now look what I did to him in the rematch". And then hes going to retire like a badass. And basically tell everyone fuck you nobody has shit on me.
