Going Vegan for at least 30 days

Just sayin'... I tried it for kicks a while back. I exercise well, eat well, etc. I had some health probs as a kid, and for that reason have always been up on keeping the body healthy.

Anyway, I tried it, and one mistake I made was that I didn't realize how few calories vegetables have. And caloric intake is necessary for overall health. I was basically starving my body by not doing it right. And as a result threw off my metabolism. It's taken some doing to correct.

Good luck... good health!

Fortified

lol fortified lol

Because evolutionary it is what we were meant to eat/drink?

Why is it that the only reliable source of B12 is animal products, and without it you will die, however meat is bad? How does this make sense?

It's ok, I was there too. I was delusional myself. I fully understand. Our brains are fucked up and believe in weird thing sometimes.

Please watch "In Search of The Perfect Human Diet". Amazing doc. One of the best I've seen on the subject of diets and such. They interview many high profile scientists. Both bio and evolutionary.

First of all I never said that "meat is bad". Meat is a valuable source of nutrients, protein, and calories. What is bad is eating A LOT of meat, and the typical american diet consists of way too much meat, this is why we have some of the worst heart disease, diabetes, and cancer rates in the world.

I think meat was a valuable resource when humans were evolving, and definitely contributed to our evolution. Again when we were hunters/gatherers we were eating a lot less meat because of the difficulty of acquiring it. Gathering provided for 70% of the source of food in hunter/gatherer societies.

We are truly omnivores. The problem is the ease of which we can obtain meat due to our affluence. Meat tastes good, and is present in nearly every american meal. Eating meat in moderation is a good alternative to a vegan diet if you are doing it for health reasons.

Either way the research is overwhelmingly in favor of a whole foods plant based diet as one of the healthiest diets.

And what makes you think they don't supplement or get injections? All vegans I knew get regular injections. Oral B12 has tiny absorption rate.

You're telling me all 600,000 of those vegans in the UK alone, plus all of the the high-profile vegans I linked in that Wikipedia article, plus the millions of vegans around the world, many of them in third world countries, are taking B12 injections or supplements to stay alive?

It's OK, our brains are fucked up and think weird things sometimes.

Blue Zone is concept used to identify a demographic and/or geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives ....

Cuisine

Rock lobster, scampi, bottarga, squid, tuna, sardines and other seafood figure prominently in Sardinian cuisine. Suckling pig and wild boar are roasted on the spit or boiled in stews of beans and vegetables, thickened with bread.

From Blue Zone wikipedia:

Plant-based diet – Except for the Sardinian diet, the majority of food consumed is derived from plants.

The Sardinian diet looks high in seafood which is definitely better than red meat.

Interesting information though, thanks for linking to this.

B12 can be tough for vegans. You can drink fortified soy/almond milk which has B12 in it. Fortified cereal. As well as supplementation.
There have been countless studies that show that naturally occurring vitamins are far healthier for you than vitamins coming from supplements/unnatural sources.

There are millions of seniors in Canada getting B12 shots, what is so surprising about it?

I was the one NOT taking and supps, as I thought the vegan diet was perfect and why would it needs supplementation? And I was the one to get sick.

What your numbers don't say is how many of those 600,000 are transitional or temp vegans. Many people try and fail or quit.

Anyways, I am going to stop any arguments in this thread as my time is more valuable than this. I stated my point. Everything I said is from first hand experience of being vegan for almost 3 years and ~ 6 years of hobby level research into health and diet.

I just find it so wonderfully ironic how you come into a thread and talk condescendingly to someone else about having delusions when it turns out that you seriously think that millions of vegans around the world are either a) injecting themselves, b) transitional, or c) about to die due to lack of Vit. B12. See ya.

New jack, i'm too old to have 'bros'. I actually wanna know what ethical reasons you have against eating meat.

No trolling.

I love the taste of meat much more than any vegetable but I don't prefer to eat with the knowledge that another animal had to live a miserable life and was then slaughtered just so that I could have a cheeseburger. I live a perfectly happy life without having to slaughter any animals--animals that are not unlike my Boxer at home that I love.
