I didnt read the whole thread and I have no pics, but when I decided that I didnt want to go to BestBuy and buy another outdated POS for 4x markup, I instead went researching around at Tiger Direct and New Egg, tomshardware, and other places and learn a bit about how to set up my own build.
I went a super cheap ass route though. I reused a miniATX case I had from my old box which limited me to boards, but that was OK.
Here is what I got ( please dont lol, it was my first ever build on my own and I wanted to stay cheap as fuck since I go thru computers like water ):
1. Reused my NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT ( im not a gamer or power graphics user, plus I overclocked it for this build )
2. Bought Corsair TX 750 PSU. I could have went 850, but knew I wasnt pushing the limits of anything, so why bother? Plus it was on severe discount.
3. AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black. I've always like AMD so I didn't go intel. I picked a 4 core and not a 6 because I read a lot of apps dont take advantage of 6 core yet and I wanted to make sure my shit ran with my software for sure so I played it safe. I also got the 955 because I knew I could overclock it easily ( I could the higher end ones too, but again Im not pushing limits ).
4. M4A88T-M MotherBoard. Again, I went cheap because I knew I wasnt pushing anything, plus I could overclock this as well.
5. Only 8GB mem. resued.
6. Reused HD's from several other rigs I had. All about 750 GB each ( non SSD ).
7. stock fans and everything else stock. I leave the case door off to help with ventilation ( it doesnt heat up though ) and just spray it out with compressed air every week.
I only spent a couple hundo on the whole project minus the win 7 lic I needed to buy. I wasn't for sure if I could even build this on my own, overclock it, or get my apps to work once I did build it, so I didnt want to invest anything in it other then what I had to.
Compared to what it was before ( some old POS win XP computer ) it is running like a fucking champ. This was really just a project to see if I could even do this. I always though build a desktop would be hard for some reason on your own.
My next upgrade is to upgrade the MEM to something faster and larger ( looking at 32 GB ) and to also go SSD ( need to figure out how to clone the other HDs, move to SSDs, and not fuck anything up or re do license. ) and then to also update the graphics card as well. Most likely when I do this, I will want a new rig since I know new chips are coming out and such. When that happens, I think this will still be a nice "backup" rig though.
