Acclimating to this Heat

i dont get this? hot? hydrate yourself and get in shape.. nothing else you can do.

workout in the heat and get used to it.

I don't get it. Should I rush off to Canadian sub-burbia with a big smile on my face, and drop $800k so I can live like the Jones', and preach about how awesome I am? That doesn't make much sense. I can live anywhere in the world, so why would I do that?

Why exactly $800k?

You're gonna burn out if you walk everywhere, also 2 weeks is nowhere near long enough to acclimitise, it'll probably take you a few months before you get properly used to it.

When I moved to Arizona, years ago, I arrived in the early summer and dealt with temperatures as high as 120F. Obviously it has next to no humidity, but it was definitely a far cry from New York. I walked around in the summer heat and drank lots of water and quickly got used to the weather. Even at its hottest, I loved it.

I'm a very tall, thin person, so that probably helps. Very little fat, and my body does not retain heat very well.

I moved to Florida 5 years ago and I still dread the heat and humidity of September. I will say though, that I did learn to withstand it a bit after a few years. I had to change the way I dressed, and started drinking a lot more water- but it's tolerable now.

I can tell you that wearing light, button down, short sleeve shirts, shorts and flip-flops helps quite a bit here.

What about education?

What about it? I don't have kids, but I've heard the international schools here are excellent. Not sure about public schools, but I do know the poor in Thailand even have their university paid for by the government if they decide to attend. Socialism!

How are the roads?

Get ya from point A to B in a flash! Does this mean I get to point out how absolutely amazing and modern US infrastructure is, and how absolutely none of it is outdated and decaying? You have bridges literally falling into the river, for fucks sakes.

What happens when you're in your palace when you have a heart attack?

Don't understand. They've discovered the amazing technology of ambulances too. Their doctors are just as well trained as in the US. Only difference being, instead of sharing a room with 6 people and seeing a nurse once every 3 hours, in Thailand you'll have your own private room with sofa, TV, wifi, and microwave, and a nurse around almost constantly.

How long does it take for an Amazon shipment to arrive?

Not sure. I know a bank card via DHL takes about 72 hours though.

What about Thailand's famous water pollution?

I drink tap water, and I'm still alive. Shall I pull some studies regarding the tap water in North America?

The air pollution?

Depends where you live. If you live in an 11 million person city, then yes, it's going to be polluted. Can I bitch about the air pollution in LA? I remember staying there, and looking out of my 4th floor balcony in the morning. Wasn't very clean. There was this huge cloud of grey smog underneath the actual clouds.

The corruption that runs rife amongst officials so far as bribery and so forth is concerned?

Would you really like to get into a debate regarding how corruption affects daily lives in Thailand versus the US? Think twice before saying yes.

People move to Thailand to escape the "oppression" of the US

People move to live a better life.

seemingly ignoring the fact that Red Shirts are killed by the Thai Security force every year unnecessarily.

Again, would you like me to start pulling statistics that compare Thailand to the US for number of arrests, prisoners, murders, etc.?

The government closes hundreds of websites every year, tv shows, publications, etc as a form of censorship.

What? Source?

Fuck getting caught in this "land of the free" with any drugs on you, too. What is it, "rehabilitation camps" that are run by the military?

Yeah, drug laws are harsh here. You know that going in. Same type of thing as you don't criticize the king. Besides, US drug sentences aren't exactly lenient. As for the rehabilitation camps run by the military, you've been reading the internet too much. No, they just get shoved into prison with everyone else.

There's countless reasons I'd choose to pay more to live in a developed country, than have a house with 100 servants in a 2nd/3rd world country like Thailand.

Well, then by all means go for it, but don't look down on people because they actually had the balls to step outside of their comfort zone, and check out what this world has to offer.

Why exactly $800k?

Just a number I pulled out of my ass, but that's probably accurate. Go to typical sub-burbia in Canada, say outside of Calgary or Edmonton. Wander around, and if the average person sold off everything -- house, vehicles, furniture, toys, etc. -- and had no debt associated with it, about $800k is right.

100 minutes? Sounds like bullshit to me. Seems like if you're fit, get out and normalize with plenty of outdoor activities, and don't overdo it on the AC otherwise you won't adapt.

Fuck all that noise though, glad you're back.

Sounds good. Word of caution, if you ever start making your own Thai food at home, don't touch those chillis with your bare hands, especially if you're cutting them up yourself instead of using a mortar & pestle like Thais do. Otherwise, the next time you take a piss, you'll regret it for at least an hour. I've learned my lesson, several times now. :)

hold by the stalk and cut them with scissors over the pan.

LukeP, stop fucking around and lose some weight, bang some hoes, put some pictures up. What is this whiny threads, that's jeffrey job, stay out of that shit.
by the way, Why don't you date a thai babe and have her cook for you?

Having lived in Houston 29 of my 33 years, here are a few tips:

Stay inside from 10am until 2pm. Avoid the most stagnant heat of the day by doing things in the early morning before the sun is all the way up and in the late afternoon when there is more shade.

Stay out of the direct sunlight when possible. Walk in the shade of buildings.

Avoid other people and seek breeze. If you're in a crowd, you're going to get hot. If you're on your own away from the mob, you're more likely to catch a breeze.

Expect sweat. Sweat is your body's natural cooling mechanism, and in high humid heat you're going to naturally get hot and dewey. That means you're going to sweat. You can't stop yourself from doing it, so expect it. Skip fancy lotions and make-up (not that I expect you wear any) and invest in good antiperspirant. Then you just do what you normally do with a sheen of sweat at all times. You get used to it. This is part of why a lot of us look so fresh-faced all the time - we glow. :)

Stay hydrated. As others have said, you should expect to drink water nonstop. Skip soda and alcohol during the day if possible, and just keep drinking water to replace the sweat that will naturally be seeping from you most of the day.

I've traveled to enough dry places (hot and cold) to understand what you're probably hoping for. It would be perfect to walk outside in the heat and not feel hot and sweaty. It's unlikely to happen. Part of living in Houston or anywhere else with this particular climate is to simply expect to feel hot, to live with being hot and to dress and act accordingly.

I'm not doing too well in this heat yet, bros.
At this rate I'll be back in the US before new years...

Yeah right, just admit you went there for a holiday to save face and all your wordly belongings are still packed away in a cardboard box back in ya mom's basement.

Also, go have a sauna. You won't believe how cool it'll feel when you get out and it might help you shrink your fat gut.

I can never ever, for the life of me, understands the attraction of third world country. Maybe it's the yellow fever? I know foreigners had an easy time getting laid in 3rd world country but that's it.

Hospitals are shitty compared to 1st world. Yea, you get larger rooms for your dollar, so what? I rather live than die.

Education is shitty, brain washing, ignorant, did i say shitty, makes you stupid and shitty.

Infrastructure are overpriced, rip offs and generally unstable. I'm talking about roads collapsing, whole apartment collapsing. (don't believe me? Fuck you)

And don't ever get caught in a dark alley. You'll get robbed so fast, you don't even notice that you're eating dirt. Don't believe me? You're an ignorant shit.

What's my credentials? I lived in third world shit hole for 29 years.

You wanna switch passport with me? I'll grab it off your cold hard hand so fast your eyes won't even register.
