If you use caffeine, cut it off completely.
Whenever I'm in the habit of drinking caffeine, my endurance is cut down to near nothing. When I've cut it out after a few weeks, I don't get winded nearly as easily as I would when I have caffeine in my system.
No idea why it works like that, but I've been on and off caffeine and have been able to confirm that's the cause.
