Some family friend has an offline business (aesthetic surgery).

He always asks me how he could find new patients via the internet, but to be honest I have no clue (I earn money thorugh the internet myself but that's just not my cup of tea).

What I was thinking so far:
- start some AdWords campaign .. but volume is low for the keywords in question, or it's keywords where people are just looking for information (hard to make some leads? hard to track?)
- try to buy leads somewhere (needs to be high quality.. but where?)
- try to find affiliates and pay them per lead (maybe too big)

What is the right way to approach something like that?
The thing is, this guy ofc already has a business, websites, etc so its difficult to track results when doing SEO or promoting on keywords that are informational. This guy wants to spend up to $10k on some tests, but there should be some results to look at in the end I guess.

I would appreciate any help!

If I were you, since you seem to have admitted you wouldn't know what to do with the money, therefore are not going to be able to come close to profiting, I would tell your family friend that you don't know what you are doing in that regards.

Simple reason, it's a family friend, and it's recommended not to mix family and business. If you take his money and don't get a ROI and do it for free, they'll think you're a dick or cheated them. If you charge them, which I hope you are going to do, and don't get results, they'll think you're a dick. Either way you're a dick.

Regardless the route, you're taking money and have no idea what to do in order to get profits/leads etc. Since it's a personal relationship, they'll respect you more if you tell explain to them the truth.

You're looking for a Hail Mary, it's not going to work out. This is one of the main reasons the Internet Marketing industry looks so shady. Anyone with a computer can say they do Internet Marketing, and when they don't get ROI, the end customer feels they got screwed and then gets jaded of the whole industry.

If you don't know what you are doing, do the Internet Marketing world a favor AND more importantly your family friend a favor and don't take the money in hopes that you'll hit an instant home run the first round. Just my 2 cents.

Personally I think long term SEO is a waste of time, and PPC might be your family friend's best route.

Thanks for your lengthy and insightful advise!
I agree with you 100%, I really shouldn't take/spend money on something that I have no clue about.

However, what do you think about hiring somebody that can do exactly that? Like, a PPC or SEO agency. To be honest, I have been talking to some, but we hesitated because they seem to have high fees that are eating the budget (sometimes the fees were more than the budget .. So I thought for a moment, if I lose the majority of the adwords budget myself, it still might turn out better than paying the fees LOL).

So, I understand now that I shouldn't do that myself.
Now, if you have suggestions on how to do this the right way, please let me know. I/We would truly appreciate it.

Have to agree with CCarter above, your first attempt at a niche isn't usually the successful attempt, and lead generation is not as cut-and-dry as you think it is; a lot of work has to be put in to get leads to respond right away, down the line, and eventually make a purchase. However if you still decide to move forward a few tips;

- Capture as much contact info as you possibly can on the lead, so many people forget to take down alternative phone, something that can REALLY increase conversions.
- Contact that lead ASAP, they need to know they'll be receiving more info soon. Better if you can offer them a free info 'kit' or something of that sort before the actual sell.
- Market locally if you already aren't (slap yourself if you ran national ads..lol)
- Consider non-traditional channels to market to. Think of who wants this surgery, and how you can get it in their face OFFLINE.

Squeeze as much info as you can out of these leads and you'll be able to market other products to them after this particular campaign. Treat your leads good and don't spam the shit out of them.
