Having an office won't prevent distractions if you're constantly going to youtube or checking sports stats.

That's true, but there is an easy fix for that.
The main distractions you have to deal with when you're working from home is that there is no clear separation between work and life. Try working 3 years from the same place where you sleep, eat, play, fuck and you will feel like you're hustling 24/7 and you have no way to cool off. When you open the door to your office you automatically know that it's hustle time and that you will work the next 9-10 hours fully committed on your business. When you get out of the door after a long day you know that you'll leave your business behind in your office and will not take it home with you.
 


I used to make a lot but, not so much anymore. The type of IM work I do has little work/like balance. I pretty much need to be plugged into the net 24/7 to make sure 'things are working'. Right now have much more free time with other income sources/ventures.

Yeah the point of internet marketing is to work from home. Before I wanted you to shut the fuck up but now I quite enjoy when you post considering every time it's something more absurd than the last piece of written flatulence you decide to let loose.
 
Wherever I'm online, whether at home, coffee shop, or car.

It helps if you're goal-driven, can ignore silly distractions (boobs, games, calls, WF, etc.) when it's time to work, and have no problem cutting people off and telling them, "I need to get this stuff done." :)
 
I was happy when I started working from home... then a few years passed and I started to miss the whole office culture. I thought I would be more productive back in an office too. So I gathered my telecommuters, forced them to go into an office with me and now... I hate it there loooool. I hate people knocking on my office door all day, hate the chit chat, hate the seemingly endless interruptions caused by having my employees in the next room. I try not to be a bitch but it seems like my formerly independent, self-starting employees now second guess everything. They want constant input and reassurance.

Sometimes I go and rent a hotel room and work from there. I like the silence, I get so much done. But yeah... kind of defeats the purpose of having an office I suppose.
 
I'm more productive at my home desk with my pc. At work I have a mac and it makes me want to kill myself at times when shit locks up (2x quad core with 16gigs) and fucking eats an entire project. Today I had to start over at 4pm with a morning backup after it locked up and I had to power off, when I turned it back on the entire folder of scripts was just completely gone and the entire scene in the game engine was ruined. Second time this week. So not only did I have to re-write everything I made today but had to remake the entire fucking thing from scratch.

Also the mac doesn't work with the tablet I'd like to use, and it's blackmagic video card conflicts with my webcam so I have to compile and transfer the app to my tablet, install it, open it, just to see what's working, rather than hitting play in the editor and pointing my webcam at the target, and reading the console to track errors(hard to do on device that can't be plugged into computer). That's just for android, for ios I bang my head on the desk scream fbombs and wonder to myself, why? Why does apple do it this way and eventually xcode compiles and things work out.

I usually get my best work done on my back deck, if it's around 70-75 degrees out. The downside is I only have one screen instead of two, but I like the sounds of outside. I live in the suburbs so there's not a lot of noise, but not complete silence. I also leave the dogs outside and then take breaks every 30-45 minutes to play with them for a few minutes. I find I have a much more enjoyable day there, then inside or anywhere else, which probably directly results to me being more productive.
 
I don't understnad how anyone tollerates working on a laptop. It is either my home PC (27") where I can drop into Path of Exile as need or office (~30").

Right on, tethering at a decent speed on a car / train / plane is pretty futuristic.

I've moved a majority of my business and daily process into the cloud (Drive, Amazon, etc.). I hook in via 3G (Chromebook with Verizon Wireless) or wifi. Location has essentially become a non-issue.

It's very liberating, especially since the Chromebook is light as a feather. You can walk miles, and never feel it. And I know you like to walk. ;) And if it gets swiped, it's not a huge issue. Everything is in the cloud and Chromebooks are cheap, even the 3G-enabled ones.

This. Plus I like my tunes blasting which usually doesn't go over too well in an office, and I hate listening to music on headphones in an office environment because I then can't hear what's going on around me, which is usually just distraction unless there's some sort of collaboration/project discussions going on.

I work best at night after dinner, once the girl has gone to bed, undisturbed until late (or early depending on your point of view) and then I can sleep until whenever.

I also HATE commuting. There's not a bigger waste of life than getting to and from an office. I cannot comprehend those that sit an hour or more, each way, each day, 5 days a week, 20 days a month, in their cars or on public transit getting to and from work. That's an entire 40 hour work week wasted each month! Not to mention the time wasted making yourself presentable to go into the office environment every morning. There's something to be said about crawling out of bed whenever you like and walking 30 seconds to your workplace in your most comfortable lounging around the house clothes.

Working from home is shit, all my favourite disctractions plus more. Plus people seem to think they can just ask me for favours whilst I'm at home as if im not busy trying to work.

i'm interested in how you address the security issues of connecting to the cloud over wifi... i might very well be interested in a solution like yours (i'm permanently mobile) but i can't work around the security issue. i have a verizon hotspot so i could in theory connect to the cloud securely, but i assumed (perhaps wrongly) that doing everything over my hotspot would eat so much data that verizon would shut me down.

My best ideas come when I'm traveling, plane rides/longer car rides. For getting shit done, pounding a red bull and heading to moms basement to the dual monitor setup works spectacularly until she starts asking when i'm gonna get a girlfriend, pay rent , clean up, move out etc. That shit totally throws my rhythm off!
