So I need to get some dental work done, nothing too severe a chipped front-tooth and deep cleaning. I don't have insurance so cash is my only option as I'd like to get this done quick and within budget.

I've got around $2,500 and I live in Cali, my idea is to travel to Mexico to get the work done quick and within budget. Simultaneously I would like to start traveling and Mexico is close enough for me to dip my toes and get a feel on how to go about traveling abroad.

Wondering if any of you have experience or advice you could share? Perhaps a different country I should visit?

I can't imagine it costing more than that (or close to that) here for just repairing a chipped tooth and a cleaning.

Most dentists give generous cash discounts anyway. Unless you're just looking for an excuse to go to Mexico, in which case I say go for it.

I've had friends that went to Tijuana for dental work. Some positive experiences, some bad. Do as much research as you can obviously and if you can get a recommendation from someone who's had a successful experience, all the better.

My thoughts on Mexico. As someone who's been going down there since I was a teenager, usually on camping & surfing trips well south of Tijuana, I avoid it like the plague. With all of the drug killings and violence in Tijuana, I would not feel comfortable hanging around the city for any length of time. I still might consider going south to Rosarito or Ensenada, but even that has me uneasy in recent years. I miss going to Mex with the only worry being a bullshit speeding ticket from a cop looking for a handout. Last thing you want to do is get caught in the crossfire or end up in the desert with your head missing for no reason.

Be smart with this decision, dentist wise and travel wise.

When it comes to your health it's best not to screw around, if a Mexican dentists pulled the wrong tooth you'd be shit out of luck. It helps that in the US if they did happen to screw up there's an insurance company to [literally] fix you.

Paging BlueYonder. She's researched this extensively.
My research into Mexican medical/dental care: pushing through the metal gate at San Ysidro and seeing "Farmacia!" "Dentista!" and "Medicina!" upon entering d/t Tijuana.

If anyone is interested in European dental tourism, that's another story. You know that I know that you know where I'm going for my toofies. :hollering:

Where in Cali are you? I've got a friend in the OC that's a dentist. If you want, PM me a pic of your tooth. I can ask him. Or, I can you give you his info.

Dude, my dentist is without a doubt the best dentist in the history of teeth. I've been going to him for 15+ years. He's the nicest guy and his prices aren't that bad. You'd probably be looking at $125 for the chipped tooth and cleanings are around $80 + xray costs if needed. I'm in Oceanside and I'll be glad to get you his info if you're interested. Save you a trip to TJ and possibly getting your entire face shot off. You wouldn't really need teeth at that point, but the choice is yours.

You don't have to go to MX to get that done! You got the cash!
Remember, you get what you pay for.

That being said, I go to Nogales,AZ for my work:

It's 1/3 the price
It's an excuse to get a 'script
Strip(fuck)clubs

Honestly, you don't have to travel unless you want to.
If you wanted to come to AZ, I could recommend some in Nogales and Algodones

As others have stated, $2500 is way more than enough to get this done in the states. I'm not sure what the procedure is for a chipped tooth, without going for a crown. But even if you opted for a crown it probably wouldn't be anymore than several hundred dollars and likely much less.

If you do go the Mexican route there are well established American dentists that work in border towns. It's a good way to save on taxes and insurance. You have to do your homework but they are there. As others have said, not worth the hassle for such a minor procedure.

Dam, I was thinking this would cost me much more out of pocket since insurance premiums are couple thousand plus the co-pay bullshit.

Going to send some of you a few PMs later tonight, I'd love to do a roadtrip to be honest. I just want to get out of my city for a week or two and cross something off the to-do list.

I'm in North Cali.

I'd personally go to Mexico to get it done. You have to pay for it one way or another, so either get it done while staying at home, or get it done while enjoying a week on the beach in Acapulco or Mazatlan. I'd take the bonus vacation that comes along with it, for the same price.

Make sure you go to a professional. Do your research!!!!

I'm sure you can get it done within your budget.

Nice pic of zimmerman's lil sis.
