Make the Hot reads text bigger or something. It looks awkward being that small in such a big space.

Not to bad otherwise.

I agree make it snazzyy. The Hot links need to be, well... Hot. :D

Hahahahahah thanks for your vote of confidence. Not a designer so I'm doing my best although it's messed up in IE I just found out. I'll be working on that tonight. The two boxes at the top I'm going to have to work on... those haven't really been touched yet just put them aside to work on later.

I'll add some gradients once everything is figured out a bit more. Web 1.0... dick.... hahah
 
Hahaha, I wanted to start writing about the unpolished feel and how the word "rough" comes to mind, but the dog made me laugh like a fucker, 'cause he nailed it perfectly.

On a good side, the layout, font type & size and the overall color scheme are ok, so you need to straighten up the details. Do some work on the padding, borders, shading and link colors and it could turn out pretty good.
 
The center and right block in the header seem like dead space, and I'm not crazy about the gray. Maybe put the RSS subscribe block up there and let your post content use the space occupied by the right column, unless you're reserving that space for future monetization or the like.

Also, the image quality of your header logo looks rather poor, any way you could clean that up?
 
Now that it's loaded for me...
  1. Fix the Hot Reads at the top or remove it, their just wasting space...
  2. Fix the terrible headline rollover, so it's not yellow.
  3. Center the text in the footer, then add some more, such as secondary navigation (good for when someone scrolls to the bottom) to fill it up a bit. Use good colors such as dark grey.
  4. Add something more to the right sidebar, it's really lonely with just a FeedBurner button! Maybe a large Google ad.

Thanks for the advice folks... I'll be doing the following this weekend:
  • Getting the gradients right
  • Jazzing the two top boxes up with "Hot Reads" and "Featured Site"
  • Putting some more dynamic, interesting content in the sidebars
Thanks everyone for your advice so far... I've got a long way to go but I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. I guess learning how to make rounded corners wouldn't be a bad idea!
