Thinking about buying a Wii U for our kids to play some family games. Just wondering if anyone here with young ones does the same or have any recommendations / reviews of the console (or other gift ideas)?

Yah, our oldest is 6 so I'm wondering if the Wii U is still to advanced for his brothers or if it's something that we can all play together with a little help. The game selection is definitely a lot more kid friendly.
Good question- I have all the consoles but my kid doesn't even know because I won't play them with him around (he's a little guy).
That said, I want to introduce some reasonable amount of non-violent games to him as he's starting to become aware, and the Wii U has some great titles (Mario 3D, Zelda, etc).

I don't have a Wii U, or kids - but I'd recommend it. It's backwards compatible with almost every Nintendo game ever created. So you've basically got an unlimited library of awesome family friendly games.
Plus Nintendo is still crushing it with their exclusive titles. For example...

Bought a Wii U when I decided to run a site dedicated to it. Nintendo is still the "white knight" when it comes to video games but their selection has widened to include adult games if you'd like to buy something a little more "violent" for your kids later.
The Wii U is the 360 in my opinion: family friendly, large game selection, and to boot some great downloadable games.
Edit: I also wanted to give a shout to one of my favorite game characters Mario. You can't get any more epic than Mario in a variety of universes.
Go for it. You can't go wrong and they aren't that expensive.

My kids play the shit out of it. They don't do much xbox and no ps3/4, but they do play the wii u a lot.
Def agree with what's said above, all the wii titles run on it, which is a big deal, the VC is nice, and there are a ton of games that are really playable by my 4 and 7 year old.
The interface is a bit rough, but not so bad either kids has trouble with it.

It's not that hard once you learn to follow the instructions quick enough. but I guess I can't deny it was a bit much.
