Incompetent Drivers Who Get Offended When You Call Them Out

Anyone else notice this trend?

I was talking with both my dad and a chick friend about it today and they noticed the same thing. You get some idiot on the road, usually some liberal, usually in some cube-shaped or "environmentally friendly" car and they want to escalate at any gesticulation on your part after they "accidentally" cut you off/fail to proceed at a stop sign/pay absolutely no attention to their surroundings, etc

It's more annoying than anything else since you know for a fact they're not packing and they're not going to start any serious shit. It's more like you're offending some divine right of theirs to be unaccountable or incompetent...
 


Incompetent anything when you call them out get all indignant. Drivers, walkers, fat people, smelly people, stupid people who argue with no insight, artists.
 
No but I have noticed that every person in the world thinks that nobody knows how to drive but themselves.
 
This trend seems to extend beyond the act of driving. People are becoming less receptive to unsolicited feedback in all areas.

I suspect that trait stems, in part, from the notion that we're all equal and valuable. (If you and I are equal, how dare you think to give me feedback.) It might also stem from a culture that aggressively promotes a state of homogeneity, where everyone gets a trophy for participation.

Today, people assume they're knowledgeable and competent on all matters. As such, they believe they're beyond reproach. When a stranger provides feedback - for example, telling a driver that she cut you off - the response is more likely to be one of disdain than apology.

Most of us kick ass in a few things, are really good at several other things, and suck at 99% of life. In other words, most of us are ignorant and/or incompetent about nearly everything. That's why we hire people to fix our cars, cut our hair, and make our clothes.

The problem is, most folks have a lot of pride. And a proud person is unable to admit ignorance or incompetence.

A quick story:

A few months ago, I accidentally cut someone off on the road. The other driver switched lanes, and both of us approached the intersection. The stoplight was red.

His window was down. I rolled my own window down. He was angry, and rightfully so. I said, "I apologize for cutting you off. I didn't see you and should have been more careful. I'm really sorry."

The look on his face was odd. He didn't know how to respond to someone who was openly admitting a mistake and apologizing for its effect. The reason, I suspect, was because it's rare in our culture. My response was alien to him.

People have fragile egos, and they're prone to lashing out like injured elephants when criticized. Anyone who thinks that criticism, especially the blunt kind, works in your favor needs to read Dale Carnegie again.

I'm certainly not perfect in this department, but I know the concept is valid.

Why would that be "more annoying?" You're upset that people make threats they can't, or are unwilling to carry out?

What world did you live in before road raging pussies gave you a clue on that concept?
 
Here in Seattle prius drivers and asians are just about the worst drivers on the road. Bicyclists are also really annoying when they act like pedestrians rather than drivers when they're on the road with cars.

Co-worker got hit by a bicycle when turning left into a parking spot, the bike tried to pass on the left and T-boned him, then threw a fit. Then when the cop came he said you can't pass someone turning left, dumbass.

Health bikers are an annoying subculture. Like hipsters, or bronies.

Or fat ladies at the store who get all mad if the customer service rep isn't available like they'll go into a diabetic coma if they have to wait a minute.
