SSLSwitch - See which of the top 1000 sites have switched to SSL

So, Austin and I (both WF members) were wondering how the Google security update has affected the top global sites, so we created a script for that and want to share it with the community.

Currently there are only 154 sites out of the top 1000 that have switched to SSL.

Interesting list, though the 154/100 is a bit misleading given that a large portion of those 154 and international Google subdomains as well are their owned properties like Youtube.

Thanks for bringing this up. We will look into just taking the root domain into consideration instead of wildcarding it.
 
I was curious as to why track the top 1000. These websites already have the most traffic on the internet, and don't necessarily generate a majority of their traffic from Google or SEO, but rather have multiple traffic sources already. It would be the websites that heavily rely on SEO that are making the switch - meaning they most likely aren't in the top 1000 Alexa.

I don't foresee the top 1000 website switching to SSL just cause Google says it's one of 200+ ranking factors, since these websites all have multiple traffic sources already.

If anything, your project will confirm that Google doesn't control the internet nor does it dictate terms to other big brands on the net. And more importantly these top 1000 aren't buying the SSL is a significant factor propaganda that's being spread about by Google and their talking pieces.

I do love the marketing and link baiting of this. SEO Bloggers will definitely eat this up. This is a great example of riding a trending topic/wave.
 
Of course the top sites have other traffic sources, but a significant percentage does come from the SERPS for many of them, so it's still an important area to focus on. The top guys aren't going to risk losing .01% of their traffic if it means switching to SSL. That .01% may translate to 100% of traffic for the average small business owner's site.

Glad you liked the baiting aspect of it!
 
quite a few of the sites you list as "No SSL" actually do (wikipedia, vk), they just dont force http > https, at least for the index.

Google only takes into account those that default to https, not just one section of their site. That's why we only list those.
 
i still don't get the ssl ranking by google though. so webmasters get points for doing some extra work? what's the big deal with setting up ssl
 
Seeing more and more results leapfrogging into #1 because they have SSL, it's getting important.
