Need to be able to sell one item on a single page of a website using paypal and possibly credit cards. Do I need something like PrestaShop or is there something even simpler. I can't rule out the possibility that there would be a very few other items at some point down the road.

Is this a digital or physical product? If it's digital, there are services like E-junkie and Digital Product Delivery. There are also free plugins for WordPress. I use a plugin called Easy Digital Downloads on one site. All of these have worked well for what I'm doing and are fairly easy to set up.

I don't sell physical products, so couldn't offer any advice if that's what you are doing.

If you sell a digital product and want to deliver it to EU customers be careful about the new VAT "mess" law.
You'd use a merchant processor like:

Code:
www.sendowl.com

It is going to be a physical food ingrediant type product. At this time I am pretty sure US sales only. I'm not to concerned about setting up wordpress for something like this it's only going to be a few pages.

I would second woocommerce. It's free, quick to setup, intuitive to work with, and actually scales decently. It also has a lot more features than you might expect for a free product. There's a huge ecosystem of support/plugins for it as well.

Even if you don't care about wordpress, you really can't beat the ease of setup and use of wordpress+woocommerce. Combine it with Stripe and a free plugin and you can be in business and accepting credit cards in hours.

The only thing I've found any quicker to setup is a hosted solution like magento GO, but with something like that, you have a monthly fee and are limited in what customizations you can make.
