I'm doing intense keyword research, and wondering how long-tail is too long-tail. I'm at over 25,000 keywords now for a single niche from every possible source. How do you decide which keywords to use? 4 words? 5 words? 10 searches a day? 1 search a day?

Is every keyword worth pursuing, or do you stop at a reasonable limit of popularity?

Use as many keywords as you can tightly group into related adgroups, and write relevant targeted ads for, and send to highly relevant multi-page minisites.

Simple...

Long tail keywords are generally between 3-5 words long.

Theres no reason to not use all the keywords though... If nobody searches for it, it doesn't cost you money. Your only paying for the clicks.

Just throw shit at the wall and see if any of it sticks.

on YSM there is a limit on how long your phrase/keyword can be. I don't remember the number, but if you go over the limit you won't be able to add the keyword.

How in the hell do you guys come up with thousands upon thousands of keywords for your particular niche? My "intense" keyword research consists of throwing a general term into google's Keyword Tool and using those 150 suggested keywords.

Looks like its time for me to do a search here on WF for keyword research.

Would this be 'payday loans'(and variations) along with every city, town, county, state, zipcode, areacode, and region in the US?

That's how you can end up with a bazillion keywords.

No it's not payday loans (although combining them with major city names is an obvious tactic). It's actually a dating niche. You can very easily generate thousands and thousands of keywords with any of the keyword tools out there (KeywordDiscovery and Wordtracker in particular).

If it is a dating niche then 25000 to start with is way too low! ... Unless it is 'Female Gay Animal' niche then it is alot :D

Throw it up there see what sticks, dump what doesn't get any impressions - ones that get clicks separte into more defined adgroups - rinse and repeat.

Yeah, when it comes to long tail - just see what happens, but track and manage everything. Make sure you've got analytics running and you're using landing pages that apply to the topic.

If I click on "Meet women that like watching football" and there's nothing about women that watch football on the landing page, I'm gonna click back and you're gonna be out $0.12.

Wow... you wanna kill everything that is remotely sexually interested, in a 2 light-year radius

Seems to be pretty broad, is it because you want any to channel all kind of people to a blog or some channel where you got all the offers waiting or you have targeted offers for specific subgroups within the niche?

I will check out those tools.

Thanks man. It would be cool if a group of people would meet up and create a nice collection of the best tools for affiliate marketing.

Wickedfire should have irc chat room.
