Is anyone noticing any strange activity with Alexa rank?

My Alexa rank went up 10k in a matter of one day, so I'm not really getting my hopes up that it's going to stay. Yeah, I know a jump from 10 million to 9 million isn't much, but I'm talking 45k to 36k here. My friend also noticed his blogs went from 40k to 120k and 50k to 200k, although he didn't experience much change in traffic.

just seems weird, maybe their having a glitch :error:

edit: shit, just noticed this

Yeah I noticed some spikes in both directions on various sites. Ah well, I used to really pay attention to Alexa rank, but now I focus more on traffic and revenue rather than how popular Alexa thinks my sites are. It's still somewhat important though if you're looking to sell a site. Alot of buyers still gauge a site's worth by looking at that blue bar. :)

Yeah, Aelxa isn't the best way to rate traffic, but you've got to remember that it' not just your own site's ranking, but those of others around it.

Whilst it's unlikely that your own site will naturally progress 10k places in a day, it IS likely that a couple hundred sites could slip 1-2k.

It'd be nice if these sites published their algorithms, so people could get a real idea of what exactly is going on with their ranks... Or better yet, someone created an algorithm based on the numerous other stats and came up with soem overall average rank/placement value.

Alexa have announced they have altered their ranking system. The change made everyone’s Alexa rankings tumble.

In the past, the Alexa ranking was calculated by counting users that visited your page that happened to have the Alexa toolbar installed. Since not many general users use the Alexa toolbar, the Alexa statistic was usually criticized for not reflecting real site statistics.

The new Alexa system tries to provide a proper traffic indicator. They now get their data from a number of sources - they don’t indicate what those sources are, but they say the new system reflects proper internet traffic.
We listened to your suggestions, and we believe that our new rankings system is much closer to what you asked for. We now aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just decided to aggregate Quantcast and Compete instead. That's their new magical algorithm. But do they still charge $10k for the top 10,000 internets traffics sites? Because you can just score that for free or a few hundred bucks with a custom scraper.
