i think i already know the answer, but ive never done one so im not sure.
My dad's friend has a new job related site and wants to do a press release for $495. I told him it was a waste, but im not positive.

Anyone had any good results from a press release?

If it's locally targeted then press releases work better to get the word out as local papers just cut'n'paste anything and everything relevant to their town/area. If you mean for getting traffic to a website, well, it tends to get picked up by a fair number of splogs and news wire sites so you certainly get some backlinks. Not a huge amount of traffic though, unless it's something that catches peoples eye. But for that price I would want it to have inclusion in a major site. If it doesn't then just type one up yourself and use something like prweb. I use press releases a lot to get writeups for my daytime business website, but it always gets me a few backlinks too which doesn't hurt. I wouldn't bother paying anyone though, unless you're not too hot on grammar/spelling. Pm me if you need a link to a good PR template.

I was just listening to a podcast and the PR dude recomended the $120 one from PRweb.

PRWEB Service Features

That is if you need a few links and the company is news worthy. If it is just another site and has nothing new to offer I would not pay for one to be released. Just maybe put it up on the site if people want to read it.

What podcast would that be? I'd like to get a collection of business or affiliate related podcasts togather so I can listen to them while I work.

Umm slightly embarassing but it was shoemoneys webcast "Public Relations for Websites" from webmasterradio.fm

It was one of the few things on my ipod I hadnt listened to. I like webmasterradio stuff and I also listen to twit.tv stuff

I used PRWeb when I launched one of my web-based service companies. It really helped the launch and it got people to blog about it.

Alex would you mind extrapolating on the how and what kind of metrics you used to qualify the value of PRweb services? we use those in house but I fear that they are not being capitalized on.

Best Practices for use?

Depending on the type of audience you're trying to attract, it's not really a waste considering it's a minimal investment. Plus they give you some backlinks and help get your site spidered rather quickly. Also it gives you some fun 'news'-ish content for your front page. Gives it an 'official' feeling. So I'd say do it. Again, it depends on your market though.

It's not a bad idea to add credibility to the site. I used it on one of my sites so I could have a little thing saying "as seen on yahoo news" since PRWEB will almost guarantee to get you on there.

A press release can launch a site and give it some serious juice. If you're serious about a site. I would do it without thinking twice.

def go with PRweb. you can write the release yourself and release it there pretty cheap. You can easily gain a lot of links through it as well.

Go through my site (sig) and you'll get PRWeb distribution included... not to mention it's much cheaper ($59.99) and you'll get the added distribution of PRunderground as well.

Used properly and just as part of the launch of your business, I think they can be very effective to draw first time traffic to a new site, it's up to you and your site to bring them back.
