When it rains it pours....

I'm also in Minnesota. When the summer rolls around... it's absolutely amazing. It's like ecstasy for 3 months straight.

I think everyone form cold climates suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder to an extent. I certainly do... I dont get 'depressed' per se but, definitely just low and bummed out. Mid-winter vacation to Mexico is essential.

Now it's beautiful here... and people complain that it's 85-90 degrees and 'muggy'... shit, enjoy it while it's here... much better to be hot and sweaty than -30 degrees and freezing cold.

I have Reverse S.A.D (self diagnosing here) When it's dark, stormy and rainy...I'm as happy as a peach. I LOVE it. When it's sunny all the time it starts to grate on my nerves. I used to lived overseas and I miss the monsoons :(

@OP perhaps you should reverse AIMs advice and travel to arizona or newmexico (or some other desert area) whenever costa rica is in it's rainy season.

SEOlson203: If you're suffering from SAD, try getting some light therapy in.
Easiest way to DIY it if you can't find a clinic is to get a heap of yellow CFL bulbs in some lamps that have white paper shades over them. I've found it has a similar look to sunlight, and it helps my mood.
I also got semi-transparent gold curtains. Even when there's barely any light outside, it's still a nice sunny colour.

That's not reverse SAD... that's just being an in the closet Goth ;)

How cheap is costa rica? I think of moving there or something for this summer, can't fucking take living in the city anymore!

** or some cheap small town.

I was thinking about that. I wanted to go on a working trip to thailand or costa rica. I think they are both pretty cheap.

So as you can probably read, I live in San Jose, Costa Rica. I moved down here partly because I am from Minnesota and I don't really enjoy the cold weather (wrong state to live in i know). I hated the cold but I cant remember ever getting depressed because it was getting cold out...

but now that I live in Costa Rica, we only have two seasons, rainy season and dry season. i moved here during the dry season and not that I am experiencing the rainy season, I am suffering some pretty intense depression. It's almost like i got used to the sun everyday and now when it starts to rain i get sleepy and kinda melancholy. i know this is probably just your skin craving the vitamin D it is used to producing from sun exposure but i dont remember ever feeling this when I lived in Minnesota and it was cloudy and overcast during the winter. i know it is related to the weather and not my lifestyle because when it is sunny here i feel really good but maybe its the everyday rain thats getting to me.

that got a lot longer than i had planned....anyway....

do any of you go through this? anybody in a similar situation? any suggestions to get over it? I have about 6 months of rainy season to endure....

Small world! I'm also from Minn, but moved to Costa Rica about 2 years ago. I'm actually back in MN visiting the fam and fighting the mosquitoes right now, but I understand you about the rainy season.

It definitely affects my mood, but not to a great extent. After the winters of MN, a little rain in the afternoons doesn't bother me. It sounds like you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder and i'd suggest heading out to Manuel Antonio or even better yet, Montezuma or Mal Pais for a weekend at the beach!

Also, I live in the San Jose area (Heredia) and I'll be back in country on the 12th. It's always nice to meet a fellow ex-pat, so feel free to hit me up at lance@paradisecellular.com :)

Cheap is a relative term of course. If you're coming in from Cali or NYC, then CR is going to seem like a dream... but it is the most expensive Central American country to live in. that being said, my total monthly expenses there (rent on a 2 bedroom, internet, phone, utilities) is about $500 a month :D

High tech items though, like computers and car are about 40 to 60% more expensive in CR.

"Rain?" "Snow?" Bah. If your local weather is getting you down, spend a summer in Alabama.

It goes like this:

Drought, drought, drought, drought, flood, tornado, drought, drought, drought, flood, tornado, flood, tornado, drought, drought, flood, tornado, flood, tornado, flood, tornado, drought, hurricane.

From about two weeks ago, on up to October. Fun!

"Rainy season!" "Sometimes it gets real cloudy!" How quaint.
