I was thinking, though, it's probably high-time that the DoD started investing in technology. Maybe even cutting edge stuff.

They could form a new agency.. call it Defense Advanced Research. Projects. We could even give it a cool acronym, like DARPA. Maybe then they'd be more abreast of the interwebs.
 


The people behind Internet2 are large universities, government agencies and multinational corporations.

Now, would it be in their best interest to allow Internet2 to have the same freedoms and free flow of information that the Internet currently has? Absolutely not.

I really really doubt it. If the universities are the major players, they more than anyone believe in total freedom of information. Hell, there are a few universities here that even have exemptions on what would normally be highly illegal material for research purposes, and I'm sure it's the same in the States. Universities ALWAYS push for lack of control over information flows (except when it regards their accounting procedures).

And I doubt Internet1 will get shutdown and everyone moving to cloud computing.
There are big issues with cloud computing that don't make it suitable for everyone, namely what happens if you net access is interrupted.
Even if all the big groups do move to Net2.0, you're still going to have people that insist on having a real computer, instead of a dumb terminal.
 
The net2.0 crap has been under discussion for at least a decade. It will not happen, and if it does happen, it will not work.

Computer science happens to be my expertise, and I know that cloud computing does not work in real life scenarios. (completely irrelevant to cluster computing, some people confuse the two)

The only networking system that works is the WWW as we know it, a universal language (TCP/IP), different independent nodes and multiple ways of connecting all wired up like a messed up ball of wool. It is called an ad-hoc network, meaning spontaneous. Chaotic if you like. Natural.

Nothing structured can work on such a grande scale.

I enjoyed reading both of your takes on this, gloleaf and HarveyJ. It's good to get perspective, especially from experts in the field.

So at this time, I will remain, optimistically cautious. ;)
